On a stockish rebuild I would go with the 440 magnum, Roadrunner/Superbee cam. Melling makes a stock replacement.

Long shot but maybe teflon tape on the sender threads not ensuring a path to ground? I only say this because I recently installed a fuel pressure gauge and it specifically said no thread sealant because of this reason.
