Saw a @dart4forte post on FABO about his and his wife's recent health issues.

Been Out (almost permanently)

Text from FABO:

Welll guys I’ve had quite ride the past few months. Started toward the middle February. Got Flu A and wa pretty sick. Started feeling better however the wife got real sick and ended up in the hospital with double puenmonia. One evening after visiting my wife I decided to grab a bite to eat at a local. Midway during the mea I started feeling quizze so I headed home. About 0200 the next morning I started montezumas revenge from both ends. Real sick. By early morning it subsided and I fell asleep. Suddenly the doorbell rang and I jumped up to answer it. Big mistake. I took a few steps and down I went. Vertigo. I do remember my head hitting the floor. After a bit of time I managed to get back on the couch. I called my granddaughter and asked her to come over. Thinking it was food poiening I called the restaurant where I ate and talked to the manger. I then called 911. The paramedics showed and did their thing. They loaded me in the ambulance and off we went. They weee super busy with me. I noticed they had the jump start kit out so this can’t be good.

Anyway after that my mind is blank. Just remember the talking but that’s all
Apparently they took me for a CT scan and while I was in the tube I threw up, and aspirated. They took life saving measures and performed CPR for two minutes, I was revived and since Inhad fluid in my lungs I was put on a ventilator for four days. I was sedated after that. I do remember my son and granddaughter buts still foggy. I finally woke up in the ICU. I was transferred a few says later to the Stroke floor. Apparently in all this I had several strokes. My right arm was swollen because of fluid retention so the had me on IV Lasix. I peeded myself multipule times. ICU took out the carth. I was in that floor for seven days. They did an evaluation and it was decided they would send me to a rehab hospital. I was a mess, couldn’t stand or walk. This thing kicked my [censored].

After 23 days of rehab I’m at my sons place where he’s been helping my wife. I’m getting home health care.

Oh, when I was wretching out both ends it turns out it was mostly blood. Turns out I also had bleeding ulcers so the gastric doc took care of them. Turns out I took 3 units of blood.

Wow. OMG. What an ordeal. All the Best. Prayers too.

This is a real good guy. Got to know him somewhat in Van Nuys at Spring Fling.

Thanks to all the well wishers. Special thanks to 70chall440. He’s been motivating me to get off my ***.

Out of the hospital now but still have a long road ahead. Have some procedures pending. The gastric guy has to go back in and make sure the ulcers are healing. Saw my cardiologist on Thursday. Cardiac wise I’m a mess. Have AFIB real bad. She reduced the blood thinners I was on. I’m a high risk for strokes so we are looking at a procedure called the Watchman procedure. The only part I’m antsy about is being put under general anesticia. Been down that road. Of course the plus side is I won’t have to take blood thinners.

All the best to you and the Mrs., dart! You've really been through the wringer. Get better soon!

Best wishes to the both of you for a full recovery. Life can turn a right angle corner in a second.

Wow what an ordeal

A tale of caution
sort of;
sounds like what I've been dealing with my dad, since he was about 80
at 82, he was 5'8" 180#s, decent shape ate well, was active
& traveled a lot, RV-ing etc.
he's now 88, maybe if that 5'6" hunched over & 135#s, weak as hell

I feed him well & he still looses weight, now

It started out needing a stent, hardened arteries (Booze),
they couldn't get it in his veins, wanted to go another route, put off for almost a year
this was when he was 80, I took him & went to several cardiologists,
They had said;
that he had signs that he's had multiple strokes & multiple small heart-attacks
Dad ignored it mostly, in denial & didn't want to stop drinking or believe the dr.s
he just didn't want to believe it
something called like cardioalcoholmoropthy (? spell) hardening arteries or of the veins,
mainly from drinking heavily, no exercising ever for 50+ years, sitting a lot
past out usually, under his awning of his RV, in some obscure campsite,
with his RV group, his RV was the bar the others wives wouldn't allow it
dad's been single (3 times divorced prior, since was 40)
RV group, also a bunch of old enabler's, didn't help
& him smoking Lucky Strikes, unfiltered when he was young, like 15 until like 45
but the booze & sitting too much is a huge killer,
just as much as if not more than,
as smoking or eating a lot of fast food, out on the road traveling
& unsaturated fat constantly, with lil' to no exercise
sitting & drinking a lot

Dad, he ended up getting a quadruple bypass at 82,
should have had it done, at like 75
& had to have a pig valve, for a heart valve replacement, they didn't know about
8hrs + on the operating table, in Modesto, 80-100 miles down the hill
he went thru detox/shakes really bad, while under recovery, in ICU for a week
& had to be kept sedated, so he would NOT tear his staple or inner stitches
from convulsion's, if he was awake...

All them meds. take their toll on you, big time
8 months in rehab, one sort or another, 4 months at $7,500 a month too,
at some place up here closer, Avilon (spell ?), max days his insurance would cover
so I could visit daily & bring him bills etc.
just to learn to walk, talk & eat by himself again,
he'd choke on food a lot, still does...
In home care & home nurses 2-3 times a week for another 4 months...

I now deal with it daily, for going on 6+ years
he's lived with me since I was 48, he was 70-ish in 2007, born Feb. 1937 (he's 88 now)
I could see the writing on that proverbial wall...
He wouldn't have lived long, the way he was living...

If I didn't have him come, move in & live with me...
.
.
.
.
.
if you drink, think about this tale
if you smoke, also think about it too
if you sit a lot & out of shape, immobile
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
better treat your body good, like a temple, especially your heart
you only got one
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
some abused themselves, all in denial
with work or unhealthy habbits/hobbies for decades on end,
some drinking heavily & think no big deal & smoking etc.
thinking it's no big deal, until;
when it is a huge deal & now wonder why their health is crap
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
sometimes it's just bad genes or inherited family health issues

Oh man, that is the ultimate ordeal ! Very glad you came out on your feet! How is your wife doing ? I can’t pray enough for you and her continued recovery’s!

Dart4forte’s name is John. I dont know him that well but what limited time I’ve been around him, he is a good guy. He has gone out of his way to help others, a trait the few others have. I recall that he was doing some restoration of seat belts for Mopar friends. I’d see him in Van Nuys during the Spring Fling events too.
Sudden heath scares like this are very upsetting to those directly affected as well as those closely related. It is helpful to maintain contact with others as we get older so that help is closer to us.
John I wish you and your wife the best, I hope that you improve and get back to your daily routines as soon as possible.
