The old resto to rad articles on 383 and 440 showed power added at each step. That 1966 afb is going to be the literal bottleneck however. I wouldn't pay big money for any non oem intake with that carb unless it's been worked by a stock class racer.

Maybe because not enough juice without the alt? If you have a battery charger hook that up and turn key to run to see if you hear the noise. Should be easier to hear without the engine running

And it'll stay running in that rough idle in it's own without help? Pull each wire off while running and see if one of them makes no change in idle?
