I recently took in a load of parts including a couple of 383 engines and a 440 crankshaft that was supposedly cut down to fit a 383 block.
I'm not 100% clear on how this works. Are the main journal sizes different between the B and the RB series engines?
The longer stroke 440 crank is obviously...
Most of us have heard of how engines with flat tappet camshafts have had increased failures in the past 15-20 years. There are a bunch of opinions on what is to blame but so far, I have seen no 100% smoking gun on the exact cause. The potential causes are numerous.
Reduced zinc in oil.
Camshafts...
A gracious and kind FBBO member posted a thread a short time ago, he had some Mopar stuff left over from when he had a 69 Road Runner. He was looking to send his stuff to a good home and I was glad to take it. Chris had 2 383 engines and a collection of car parts to clear out so @CoronetDarter...
The topic of bell housing runout has gained a lot of attention the last few years with the rise in popularity of the aftermarket overdrive manual transmission kits.
Years ago, I never heard of it, never heard of anyone even talking of it. I’d hear guys talk of clutch chatter, the transmission...
I had the engine out last year at this time....
I went through it.....new dished pistons to lower compression a bit, refresh the heads, some suspension and steering mods since it all was apart.
I pondered a switch to a roller cam at the time but kiboshed it. Cost was one factor. Another...
I rebuilt the 440-493 and installed a rear main from my stash of parts. It fit so I stupidly assumed that it was correct. I just started it and have a leak. Fine droplets are flinging off the back of the engine and it looks like it is coming from the crank, not the side seals of the retainer...
I lost mine.
Looking through my stash, I found a bolt with a captive washer but the washer is a smaller diameter than the original. The stock washer covers most of the dowel pin. How important is it to cover the camshaft dowel?
I'm having trouble finding a new bolt and washer. ARP seems to...
Maybe I never noticed and have been lucky all these years.
I just installed new disc rotors in the rear axle and noticed how short the wheel studs are. These are the stock 1/2" style studs....I'm guessing 20 threads per inch?
I'm showing maybe 7/8" of stud sticking past the rotor face. I'm...
I love the reduced weight of aluminum engine parts but the porous finish seems to always end up discolored after real world street use of the car.
For my water pump housing, I sprayed it with header paint then clearcoated it with some matte clear. To me, it looks fantastic and will be far more...
I'm getting ready to start reassembly of the 440/495 for the Charger. The machinist should be done soon so with this free time, I'm gathering parts.
Oil pump drives......
The one on the far left was the one I pulled from the engine. Where it rides on the bronze bushing, it was scored a bit...
I don't know what it is but I always seem to deal with engines that use oil.
MY 2007 Ram 1500 sure does. It leaks a little but will lose a quart in around 1000 miles or less. My '70 Charger 440/493 used to use oil too. In a 900 mile road trip, I lost 2 quarts. I never noticed any smoking from...
I am going through the 440 in my car....
Re-Rebuilding the 440-493 in a 1970 Charger
One issue that I just noticed is the tech sheet that came with the new valve springs I bought.
I have the Edelbrock Performer RPM aluminum heads so I bought replacement springs for them.
Check out the specs...
Hello,
I am in the process of going through my 440/493. I am in need of new motor mounts. I don't want to use some cheap parts store stuff. I need something like the Schumacher mounts that I have used in the past. I heard they closed down. What high quality mounts have you used...
Here we go again.
I am faced with some engine troubles that warrant removal and disassembly. As with most of my other projects, I'll walk everyone through every detail and show what worked, what doesn't, what I spent and where I lucked out. I expect there to be some small detours along the way...
It looks like I will be RErebuilding my 440/493. The flat tappet MP 528 solid cam lost at least 3 lobes and I just can't risk further damage by putting in another cam without first pulling the engine and cleaning it all out. This situation would be a real pisser but it gives me the opportunity...
I'm just spitballin' here but I am considering a camshaft swap.
I'm running the Mopar Performance 528 solid in my 440/493.
It makes adequate power, great vacuum and idles pretty good but the wide lash and the clatter is getting to annoy me.
I have a Lunati solid that I ran for awhile that was...

I have a 75 Power Wagon with a stock 440 and headers. I've had a stock mini starter in it since 2013 and it needs replacement.
I just swapped in a rebuilt mini starter from O'Rielleys. I got exactly ONE start out of it and...
The reason that I ask.....
I am getting ready to install a 383 & 727 into THIS car....
It looks to me like the mount is taller than it should be. It was in the parts shed along with other parts....some of them are from parts stashes that I have collected over the years. It fits in the...
I pulled the pan to fix a dent and replace the leaky molded windage tray and it looked dirty but okay otherwise.
With the pan off, I turned it upside down and drained the rest. The oil had a real faint silver shimmer to it. The magnetic drain plug had about half a corn kernel of goo stuck to it...
