Wow, I had a car just like that back in the early 70"s and almost the same color! It had a 383 & a 4 speed with 4.10 sure grip out back! The only reason I didn't keep it long was that a lime green 70 Challenger RT stole my heart!
I was thinking that it also could be a combo of what was stated above but also thinking that that it could also be a patch to cover some of an area that might have rusted out. How is the rest of the cars body??

Yeah I would say that pretty much answers that. While looking at the usual sites they show two different width shoes for the rear 10 inch brakes. Any clues from the pics there?

BTW that May 12th 1965 is the day the engine was assembled... If you look at the side of the block you'll see a cast in date that's probably somewhere in the 64 time frame, that's the date the block was cast....
When I owned a shop (German cars sorry!) customers would ask when to put snow tires on. My reply turkeys to bunnies ;) That time of year again.
