This sounds like a TIG job. Look around for a local shop that can aluminum weld for a permanent repair. That crack should not take more than 30 minutes for them to fix, including time to properly clean the area. My trans had a chunk taken out (about and 1" square) that was put back in place...

Split that stuff up, let it dry for the year and use lumber scraps to get the fire started, then toss on the Oak. Puts out quite a bit of heat, just tough to get it started on its own.
