The mounts are not the same. The rubber cushions might be but the mounts that bolt to the block are different between a small block and big block. Mounts are the least of your worries. For what you have I would be looking at a stroker small block.

How many miles or how much time did you have it running with things being that way under the hood? I ask just because I'm thinking if there was some decent running time that makes me think the weird configuration may not be directly at fault and it is just one component failed or a connection...
