    The TQ is as reliable as it gets when assembled properly. You should check the O rings & plastic cups under the primary main jets [ for leakage ]. 'The carb was never touched'. Amazes me how people think a 50 yr old carb should just bolt on & work perfectly without any internal checks....

    Troubleshooting the charging system will reveal the answer. Replacing parts and taking guesses will not.

    Welcome from Alabama. What alternator did you replace it with. If it's a dual field and one field is not grounded, it still won't charge. Parts house will not tell you this.
