I made that mistake initially on my 69 GTX, I drilled both sides to match. Fortunately i immediately seen the error of my ways and repaired my mistake while still in primer.
If you use the same measurements on both sides, one emblem will be placed incorrectly because the pegs are not uniform...
Some weights to ponder: The Trickflow 240 heads weigh 5 lbs. more each than 440Source Stealth heads. The Trickflow Track Heat intake weighs 5 lbs. less than a Holley Street Dominator.
The groove is caused by the check ball moving back and forth in the channel. This is a normal condition. As long as the hole where the ball seats is undamaged there will not be an issue. I build these by the dozen. Never had this condition cause an issue.

Yes: I always thought it looked cool on the quarter panel. First thing I did when I had my 67 GTX painted. It may have been a bit of a GM thing though as it seemed to be a factory option on a lot of GM products in the 60's.

Have quite a few mopars, but this is my latest early 90's paintjob charger purchase. It came with a 68 front end on it, but I will be putting the correct 69 front back on it. Looking forward to chatting more.

The gears, both on the main shaft AND their corresponding gears on the counter shaft (with the exception of the reverse idler gear) are in constant mesh. It's the synchro rings and sliding sleeve that couple the appropriate synchros to the gear selected take the abuse The grinding noise one...
