Could resistance cause significant backfiring? Resolved!

Gentlemen - In the process of switching out the steering box, re-wiring the engine and headlight harness, upgrading the ignition and coil, bypassing the ballast resistor and rebuilding plug wires etc . . . I ended up mis-marking the #1 and #3 plug wires when I reinstalled everything. A simple...

Could resistance cause significant backfiring? Resolved!

I have bypassed the ballast and put in a new Master Blaster 2 coil. The voltage readings are much better. Thanks for your help on that. I've been adjusting the timing a bit and thought I found the sweet spot, but it started backfiring again. Seems to be getting plenty of fuel. I've had the MSD...

Could resistance cause significant backfiring? Resolved!

Blk 68 R/T - I did not have issues with the old, slightly modified harness, but it was really old, bulkhead was a mess etc., and to properly insure the car I needed to replace it. Anyhow, If I by-pass the B. resistor as you mentioned on my other thread, I understand that I should connect the...

Could resistance cause significant backfiring? Resolved!

I quickly found out that was a bad idea based off some bad advice I got. The back firing is intermittent. Initially, it was happening when I let off the throttle. I replaced a bad plug wire the other day and thought that would resolve it. I would suspect a vacuum leak in the carburetor, or that...

Could resistance cause significant backfiring? Resolved!

Here's problem with my 1968 318 / auto: I'm trying to sort out a serious backfiring problem. At times it backfires so hard it sounds like its breaking and kills the car while it is at an idle. It will hardly make power when I put it in gear. I've doubled checked to make sure I'm not pulling...

    MSD distributor thread

I have been running a 8388 MSD "Ready to Run" distributor which replaced the original points distributor (68' small block 318) on an already hacked wiring harness that I modified years ago. In order to clean it up I'm installing a new M & H engine harness but would like to keep the MSD. The MSD...

    1968 Steering Shaft spline

Thanks for your help. It's all straightened out and the steering wheel is clocked in better than before I started. Now I'm off to the wiring . . .

    Ready to Run Distributors

I'm resurrecting an old thread . . . I have a 8388 MSD "Ready to Run" distributor that replaced the original points distributor (68' small block 318). The MSD has a three plug connector running from the base of the distributor and plugs into the matching plug runs from the coil and the ground...

    1968 Steering Shaft spline

Gentlemen - I have two questions: 1. I dropped the steering column on my 68 Charger and noticed this star-washer laying on the floorboard and I think it came down as a part of the grounding wire from the steering column to the plastic slide based on the picture below from a 72 Roadrunner. Am I...

Modifying an electronic ignition wiring harness

I need to replace the engine wiring harness on my 68 Charger with a small block. The harness looks fairly original with some mods over the years such as the MSD distributor I added and auxiliary temp, oil and alternator gauges. Also, still have the ballast resistor wired in, a voltage regulator...

Cable Shift 727 to Floor Console Shift - What should I expect

I must not have a true cable shift transmission, just a single cable operating the shift linkage for park, reverse and all three drive gears. I'm guessing it could operate the 904 linkage with minimal adjustment.

Cable Shift 727 to Floor Console Shift - What should I expect

I'm looking to swap out the 904 in my 68 Charger that has a floor console out with what I think is a "cable shift" 727 from a 1967 D100. What linkage issues might I expect to encounter when doing the swap? Thank you.

Question about voltage regulator and charging

Thanks for your advice and the links. I have the basic, bare bones alternator. I put it on after I discovered the previous alternator was not matched to the car and was the culprit for a number of issues years ago. If I have any more problems I'll look into a proper up-grade. All the best.

Question about voltage regulator and charging

Thank you Wietse and Nacho-RT74. My Voltage Regulator has the modern components. I went through another series of tests: At 1200 rpms I had 14.7 volts at the alternator (+ probe on the post leading to the battery and - probe grounded to the back of the alternator case) and 14.10 at the...

Question about voltage regulator and charging

If I may add a question since I'm having an issue similar to Sonny. I'm working on a 68 Charger with a 318. At idle I have 13.6 volts at the battery (which is brand new) and the ignition side of the voltage regulator and with the lights on it drops to 12.7. With the lights off and rpms up...
