Thank you all for the information and advice in helping diagnose this. It sounds strange like the gear is stripping the teeth. Definitely like it isn't lining up.
I will check the starter if it sits flush against the block and I will also take a look at all the teeth on th flywheel and starter...
Need some help everyone, I have a recently rebuilt 440 and the starter drags when I start the car. It has 10.5:1 compression, aluminum heads and a hydraulic roller cam in the [email protected] range. I had a oem mini starter out of a Dakota and then switched to a powermaster.
The timing was set at 16...
@Kern Dog I was worried about power brakes but this has enough vacuum to drive in the stop and go bay area traffic as well as the usual flowing of traffic and then everyone panic stops. I am happy with this cam. It pulls very hard, but this my first 440 so I can only compare to my old 360 in my...
Thank you everyone for all the replies,

I have the icon forged flat top with valve relief pistons for a .040 440. I'm not sure which one but it's whatever one will get you slightly above 10:1 compression with an 84cc...
@Darter6 that's great to know about the Schumacher headers going high 11's. A b body already has a nice amount of clearance to work on the engine but with the tri-y it adds more so it has been nice. Gears make more sense now.
I went drag racing for the first time in almost a decade. First time racing my 70 Charger and it was great. I drove 100 miles in bay area traffic to the track, bolted on my drag radials and got two runs in. I went a best of 12.6 at 106.
The engine combo is:
440
10:1 compression
Stock 440...
Update: The engine will have to be bored and honed. Luckily this still keeps it at .040. I really didn't want to spend a lot of money on this but it is what it is. The engine will be a lot better than what it was.
I have stock 440 source heads thay are being looked over by the machine shop, he...
With a feeler gauge pistons appear to be about .055- .060 in the hole. I don't have a dial indicator.
Will hopefully by this weekend, have it fully torn apart.
Thank you for the detailed write up, I just installed one on my 70 charger too but I must say something looks wrong. The angle seems very harsh. There’s little to no power assist at idle. Any suggestions?
I will be pulling the engine, I just checked the engine casting date and it is a 68 Block. When I have the engine out of my car I will check to see how far down in the hole the pistons are.
I will check to see how far down in the hole the pistons are. I can still see some cross hatch in the cylinders so I guess that's a positive. Here are some more photos. I'm assuming the black line at the top of the cylinders is oil leaking from the valve stem seals?
@diesel_lv. My thoughts exactly. I didn't like seeing that. I don't know what upset me more, seeing the flat tops or the carbon lol. Made me think that there are a lot more miles on this engine than what I was told. Also, Oil pressure is about 40lbs hot and about 60psi on the freeway.
So I am looking to add some power to my 69 440 and could use some help. The engine has about 1000 miles on it and it didn't exactly have the kick I was hoping for.
It's a stock 440 with a Holley 670 and Edelbrock performer 440 manifold.
I took off the iron 906 heads to check things out and...
Update:
Not sure what exactly fixed the problem but I changed the steering box (Borgeson) and went to the original factory style AC pulley set up and no belt slip issues even at WOT and I have my power steering back. Very happy. Thank you to everyone who answered my post and gave my ideas. I...
Well, I am still stumped. I reviewed the factory service manual and how to center the wheels and after I had centered it, I lowered down the car, took it for a drive and again, all seemed well until I began driving a little more aggressively. Again, I lost my power assist and could barely turn...
Awesome. Thank you for explaing that to me and again, thank you to everyone who has responded so quickly to explain and guide me in trying to find the root issue with my steering. When my 1 year old wakes up from his nap, I will get going on this lol. Thank you.
Thank you for letting me know and the warning. I do have a FSM but am having difficulty understanding the adjustment process? Anyone able to help out with that? Any tips or suggestions? Should this adjustment be done with the car on the ground or up in the air? Thanks in advance
