Now for the 8 3/4 diff

The larger 11 x 2 1/2 brakes will lock up before the front discs do, resulting in loss of control. Putting in smaller wheel cylinders will slow down the lock up. There are 4 sizes of rear brake wheel cylinders, and the 8 3/4 diff has the largest ones, being 15/16 inside diameter. There are 7/8...

Now for the 8 3/4 diff

I am going to rebuild the brakes as well. The drums and pads were available locally. I had to order the spring and hardware kit on ebay from rehrenberg, a seller with a lot of NOS and USA made parts for these cars. While waiting for the kit, I will get some new rear wheel brake cylinders as...

    8 3/4 sure grip replacement

The Dana Powerlock are the best, as the Chinese knock-off units are too wide and have fitment problems. The Powrer lock is proven reliable at higher power levels, and can be rebuilt if needed.

Now for the 8 3/4 diff

The gear shop ( they are also racers) called and said they can't install the posi without some grinding on the case. He says all the Chinese posi's are too wide and he has to clearance them. It takes longer, you have to remove the pinion and clean any grit out of the unit. - - - Updated - - -...

Now for the 8 3/4 diff

Just to recap, I am trying to rebuild the 74 Charger in stages and keep it driving more often than not. So far - complete small block six-pack carb, intake and air cleaner sytem - 360 engine stroked to 408, gives the carb something to work with - rebuilt 727 trans...

    Small Block Radiators

The re-cored rad is in. It fits well, and the shroud fits, too. I ran the car for a few minutes to check for leaks, but will wait for spring for a good test. I think the 3 core 22 inch rad will do the job, a 26 inch would require modifying the rad support, a lot of work, and might not look right.

    Small Block Radiators

The Six-pack, intake , carbs, and the exhaust manifolds, were all from a 1970 340 car. I had these parts on the 318 last year, until I got the stroker done, then they all went on the 408. It kept the car on the road while the new motor was being built. I am getting a 22 inch rad recored, I test...

    Small Block Radiators

I looked at the cooling system tech on this site, and it looks like other people are having the same issues with this rad. I think it is for a C-body, no hood clearance issues. Cool Craft lists a 22 inch rad for a 73-74 small block in copper brass. Has anyone tried a Cool Craft rad, and how did...

    22" & 26" Rad Width?

The round top rad measures 2 inches, where yours measures 3 1/2. I have a 22 inch rad for a big block, the narrow top tank raises the shroud location, and your fan should line up. The round top rad also places the cores to the front of the case leaving more room for the fan. I need a small...

    Small Block Radiators

It's good to know that the Champion aluminum rad fit properly. The rad I bought from cool-it was made by Spectra. It is 22 inches wide , but the high top tank is not going to work. I would like to keep the shroud, too. Where did you buy the Champion rad?

    Small Block Radiators

Well, I transplanted a 408 stroker into the 74 Charger, and put all the 6-pack stuff on it. The intake, carbs, air cleaner, and the 1970 exhaust manifolds all came off the 318, and transferred to the stroker. I got a new torque converter and a rebuilt 727 trans, and installed it all, no problem...

    1974 ChAARger

The Charger has such a long hood ! I had to drill another hole in the tubing of my engine hoist, to get it to reach the engine. But the good thing is, you can pull an engine with the hood on, there is lots of room. I used the CHP stroker kit with dished pistons, and had it assembled by...

    1974 ChAARger

I am taking it to the next level. Since I don't drive it in the winter on our icy roads, I plan to do some work on it this winter. So today I brought home a 408 stroker short block (360 based), and I am going to change out the 318 , for the 408 . I will keep the 6 pack intake and carbs, and...

    1974 ChAARger

Well, I got the exhaust manifolds and put them on. The passenger side needs to have a oil filter adapter to turn the filter 90 degrees. The driver's side manifold curves up and around. It has a different outlet angle than the old one. I took the car to an exhaust shop to do the final...

How to install 90 degree oil filter adapter

There were instructions on how to install the new adapter, ( put the gasket on the block with gasket adhesive), but no info on how to get the existing plate off. So I made a tool to grip 2 of the holes in the plate. It was on really tight, and I had a good 1/2 drive breaker bar, but no luck. I...

    1974 ChAARger

I wanted to replace those small rusty old 318 exhaust manifolds. I got a hold of a guy who has the 1970 exhaust manifolds for the 340 reproduced (Ben Snobar 360-943-6633 ). I ordered a set, he says they are a good seller. They should be, they fit any small block B-body or E-body, look great...

    1974 ChAARger

Thanks for the info, 19Charger74, I might need to get custom pushrods. I noticed that they were very tight , but the shims are working so far, just not the best set-up. I do want better ignition, so I have ordered the "orange box" as well as the ballast resistor and new plug wires. Th whiplash...

    1974 ChAARger

I didn't find any 340 engines in my area (or price range), so I figured I would keep the 318, and try to give it some more oomph. I got a set of 302 heads from a core supply, and had a shop shave them 30 thou, and do a valve job. I installed them with the thin Mopar gasket. It must have done...
