Maybe in the speedo unit. Mine had a bad odometer that did the same thing. I bench checked the replacement with a drill.

I Used omni base /clear coat 3 years ago. Holds up very well but a little more $$ than single stage. If you can swing it keep it the original color. Mine was bright red with white sweep stripe.

I sent my 1964 pump out for a full rebuild. If I remember right it was quite reasonable on cost. It works great.. no leaks or issues. If you want more info let me know.

I did the exact same thing on my 65. I used all the components including the shaft from the parts car. I did not mount the shaft until it was connected to the gear box. I think the tube on the shaft has different mounting slots. Maybe take the couple off and do a check ?.... I bet it's real...
