1970 Coronet 500 N code

This coronet recently resurfaced in Illinois area, fully documented With 49.000 miles on it, it needs a few Things but was recently driven 1200 miles in just a few days. Promising car. Original wire spoke rims on 14" rims intact, ordered car.

About this Mopar:

1970 Dodge Coronet 500 383 4BBL 727 3,23 (Non SG) 2 dr hardtop. AC, PS, Manual brakes, notice dealers emblem. All Stock 49.000 miles. AC Doesn't work but all parts seem to be there. 1983 title from Kentucky. Build Sheet confirms the car is ordered ; everything you can see including no vinyl top, is original apart from the second set of Rallye Wheels, the 14" road wheels were ordered with the wire spoke hubcaps and I have kept them of course.

I found this car on youtube at first, check video..... Original whitewall spare in the rear is still there never used and rubber is soft and not rotted ! The whitewalls in the video however were not roadworthy at all so they are gone, but I have the wheels and rims and will buy new whitewalls for whenever lots of highway cruising/show is on order. I wonder if the splash guards are dealer installed, looks like it to me.



When I bought the car I was offered a touchup job for a reasonable price, but when they started fixing dings and repairing the lower rear quarter panels, they found out they had to paint the whole car - just as well ! :D So its factory correct F8 Paint (Dupont? base coat clear coat). Solid car, and quite a bit better than I expected. They guys selling me the car are from Bethalto Illinois, Dyno Tech Automotive and they did their best to make the car able for a 1200 mile trip home (They had 4 days to do this!! ), and without having really road tested it (no plates, we brought them), The Dyno Tech guys, Jamie and Tyler Hutchins and the rest of their team worked hard. I am just full of praise.

A few notes on the 1200 mile trip back to New England: At first we had to return to Dyno Tech after two miles because there was no juice from the lighter, needed to operate a GPS we had along. Returning, it only took a few minutes to fix. Once on the highway the engine temp was perfect. Then, after half an hour @ 75mph it rose almost to the middle, steadily so and I was thinking we had an issue but it stayed there as we pulled off to fill more gas. Getting underway, the temp again crept up and up but then suddenly it dropped rapidly down to perfect, and its been there ever since. I could find no clue in the coolant, it looks clean and still is. We made the mistake of opening the fresh air vents under the dash... resulting in a whirl of old mice nests, maple seeds and other dubious remnents blasting our faces and filling the car with debris. The car didnt care. :)

The battery tray area will need to be fixed, some surface rust as you see apparant in the engine room. That and get rid of issue with transmission, it leaks when it sits still, supposedly shift shaft seal and/or just the transmission pan gasket. Exhaust leak at collector drivers side header. To be expected when it has hardly been used since god knows when, like 1999. Then just install a pertronix and have her tuned, she gets about 12,5 miles a gallon right now. I bet she can do just a little better. Just small Things and all else Works great. Missing center caps I know... I am a super happy guy, Love the car, the Green Mean Machine :D. She'll cruise on the highway at any speed you want..just about :D

Thanks to member Mr Cranium in here who connected me to a great mechanic in MA , Dave Martin , who has been doing this to the car:
Transmission :
Gone through: fixed all leaks! Bands checked and adjusted -Kickdown to 2nd @ 50mph and pulls hard! (*it only needed grommets and o rings etc due to sitting for 25+ yrs)
Engine_Ignition_Exhaust :
Installed Pertronix + Coil , original Carb completely fixed including all manual choke equipment. New spark plugs, fixed leaks exhaust system, factory headers and collectors now fit as per factory specs. She runs quietly and with power.
Rear Springs: Resprung, hardened and adjusted : Stance now perfect and handling improved!
She now runs significantly stronger and I expect improved mileage as well. I am betting on 14mpg now on highway..will be testing summer '17

Update 10.26.2016:

Hotchkiss front sway bar now installed, road ready now for spring with curves !

Update 11.12.2016:
Fuel gauge now works as it should !
Missing center caps for rallye wheels will be fit come spring and I will have two sets of wheels: The 15" Rally's pictured and original whitewall 215/75/14 with the wire hubcaps.
Could need new battery tray, have it. (Will keep original and work on it, any parts i replace I keep the original stuff)
Storage found for it so now the new paint is protected and will be polished very carefully come summer. Look out for me in June '17

N code 383 has to be a rare option. Those full wheel covers and white walls gave it a nice look. as Horace said, keep it as a 500.

Thanks, I know a little bit, have the title here registered to a Mr Chester L Duncan out of Kentucky. I picked it up from southern IL near St Louis this summer, it was being sold for funds to restore a 1968 Charger R/T that is underway. The man who owned it died suddenly but his nephew decided to continue working on the '68 R/T. I believe I am the fourth owner.

620 N code 500's were made. Yes I am getting som Hancook whitewall tires 215/75/14 for the original wheels. Splashguards may be dealer installed ? Oh and have no worries, I plan on keeping her stock. I imagine plenty of these were cloned. :)
 
Funny I looked at one of those in fla. last month! It ran but needed to be media Blasted then some metal prep then painted. Interior was missing but metal looked pretty dang good for a 70's model. I could have bought it for $5000...........!

That's the fun part. Buy it for 5k and then spend how many more k's for missing interior and unknown mechanical work and paint and XXXX hours and add that all up, what do you end up spending ? :)
 
An older thread I know....but what a BEAUTIFUL CAR!!! Be different and DON'T clone it... I have a '68 Coronet 500 myself that I love the "stock" style of.

Thanks for Your comment ! I promise, so help me god, I will never clone this car, its too rare and the only modifications are electronic ingition and a Hotchkiss front sway bar. As you notice I have two sets of Wheels: Stock and all original 14" with wire spoke hubcaps and the 15" Rallye's. Will only be driven on dry pavement and kept in a garage :)
