With new seat covers and a vinyl canopy, this gal is starting to look better up close. I’m working on replacing a lot of missing and mismatched interior screws a few and other minor details. Vapor barriers might as well have been non existent since most were just taped back into place over her life. With the original style rope weather stripping a mattress bag from Home Depot, now all is right All that is needed to make her rainy weather ready is some good cat whiskers, it just seems that everyone is out of stock….darn it!

Several years ago at a Good Guys swap meet, I found original 1972 valve covers, and just recently, I found the oil pan, so now I can finish the returning the engine to original and get
rid of the chrome. I want to steam clean the bottom of the engine because there is a slow leak under there somewhere. It might be the Moroso oil pan since it has a big dent in the front edge.

Scarlet Sue also received a new set of rear speakers and an original re-coned front speaker. The Kickers sound really good with the Aurora Design upgrade to the original AM / FM radio.

I had to get a reconditioned ignition tumbler because the ignition key was falling out when I turned a corner. I didn’t really need to replace the door locks, but the ignition cylinder came in a set with two keyed alike door locks. I also got reconditioned glovebox and console locks, since the originals were pretty much useless. I’m currently waiting on a part to finish repairing the LH door latch, verses spending a ton on a reconditioned latch, and in the process, I fixed other window hardware issues and then put sound deadener on the doors, under the quarter windows and under back seat.

While working on the ignition cylinder, I found the A/C heater control hanging from bailing wire. It was barely attached to the dash because the plastic frame was broken at both places where it attached to the back. So that got a good used box on Ebay along with a reconditioned control and the correct rear support bracket. There were quite a few other things that were just hanging from the back of the dash and are now secure again.

I also started an adventure in trim repair. Of course this old girl has a lot of dents and scratches in her stainless steel trim, but, with the help of an old book I found at a used book store, I hope I can at least make it look better. So far, I’m on my second sill plate. I just wonder how many times the door was slammed shut with the seat belts hanging in the way? A while back, I tracked down one piece of trim at a Mopar only dismantler because the left front fender piece was cut into two pieces and spliced together and then glued into place. The rest of the trim pieces are whole and are workable (I think).

There is so much to do on an old car, and fining the right original parts is a task in and of itself. But what is a car but used parts anyways?
Pictures of what I’ve been working on lately. This may not be a complete list, but I started with pulling the AM FM to get upgraded; I pulled old speakers wires for replacement; replaced the heater A/C controller with an NOS one on EBay; replaced the ignition switch; repaired my 3 spoke horn switch; replaced interior rear view; tried to replace the A pillar moldings; replaced glove box and console locks; tightened up console screws; painted luggage tray ( and broke it reinstalling it ); replaced quarter window weather stripping (boy, that was hard!); and scrubbed and cleaned just about everything I touched with soap and water.
I still have new door locks (keyed like the new ignition switch) and more weather stripping to install. I also found the original NOS valve covers that I’d like to install.
Scarlet Sue is almost back to how she came off the line, but there is always something new she needs as I move through her fixing and cleaning. Some of these pictures are to remind myself of stripped screws and bolts as I move along. I’m no electric engineer, more of a numbers person, so I’ve posted a bit on the revamped radio that I’m still trying to install. There are more questions every step of the way.

Just noticed your name, I answered a Stripe question for you on the 71-2 Satellite/road runner page.

I would love to hear more about this one myself, more pictures wouldn't hurt my feelings either!!! Looks like one KA_oool ride!!! :)

I will add more pics as the restore progresses. she came out of Arizona and is rust free. The 2 barrel was replaced with a four, but I received the original manifold and am shopping for an original 2 barrel. I'm watching one on eBay. she also has a front end anti sway bar, looks OEM but I'm pretty sure it wasn't an option on the Satellite, either. The picture I received with the car, which was claimed to be a picture of Scarlet Sue, could not have been her, since upon closer look, the rear bumper is definitely from a 1971. I think it's what someone once wanted the car to be.

Very cool, let's hear more about it!!!
Ron
Hey RJS! Well, it's really been a while since I've been on this group and this is the first time I saw your comments on this garage. ScarletSue has been at the mechanic for the last couple years to fix the distributor drive gear. I found it was not installed correctly when PO had the engine rebuilt by a shop in Arizona. We moved and my mechanic got really busy with higher priority jobs. I had my mechanic install a dbl roller timing chain and fix a few additional mechanical problems.

Well, we finally got Scarlet Sue back home a few weeks ago. While she was at the mechanic for the correction to the distributor drive gear, I searched ads and found a couple things that we needed to complete the conversion back to the original two barrel. There was the kick down linkage, and true to the sellers ad, it was a perfect fit for the 400CID two barrel carb carb setup. The next find was the correct single-snorkle air cleaner body. The air cleaner body didn't come with the temp. sensor or the vacuum line clips, so we needed to move those from the double snorkle air cleaner body to the new air cleaner body. But when that was done, we were pleased to discover, with the help of a heat gun, that the sensor and the vacuum diaphragm were completely operational!!! Still in need of the tin air heater stove that mounts over the exhaust manifold to complete this part of the restoration. More to come.

Finally completed another project. Recovered the the rear seat. Lots of blood sweat and a few tears

After a hiatus for a torn rotator cuff, I'm back to tinkering with Scarlet Sue. She has all new vinyl seats and canopy top, now. I think I posted pictures of the back seat when I was done before the rotator cuff injury. The front seats and vinyl top was outsourced to an auto upholstery guy, Rick, in San Leandro CA.
Now I have moved into getting the AM FM radio restored by Bill The Radio Guy and while I was pulling the radio, I thought I would look and see why the AC / Heater wasn't working. Well the controls were literally hanging. Someone tried to glue the control to where it mounts on the back of the rally dash. Luckily it was rubber cement, so it came off easily. Also, the back was held up by some kind of metal strap (or baling wire). Also, couple of the plastic plugs for the vacuum control in the switch had also been broken off, so I found replacements on eBay. Thanks Recharged! I'm guessing I need a new cable or water valve under the hood as I cannot get any movement with the temp control. I sure hope it's not the cable. Anyway, that will get worked out when I can pull her out of the garage.
The reason why I can't pull her out of the garage is because I also needed to replace the ignition switch in the steering column since the one that came with Scarlet Sue allows the key to just fall right out while in the "on" position. Really very annoying. I have the books for the car and read and reread the steering column section, but I want to shout out and say "Thanks" to all those who posted there trials and tribulations and even shared some great youTube videos on how to get to the point where I could replace the ignition with a new one. I started putting the steering column back together today but ran into yet another tool I need to have in my tool box. I'll have to add phono's when I get the radio back in.
At least the rally bezel hadn't been cut to accommodate a modern stereo, but I have found several cut wires under the dash. Bummer. I was able to identify and find one harness for the front speaker, but I'm pretty sure there will be more since there was monster cable very poorly installed at some point for aftermarket speakers.
There are a lot of little things to do, but it does seem to be going a little bit faster than I thought it would.

Beautiful SSP you have there !! I love the color !!
Thanks! I always wanted to paint my first Plymouth SSP the FE5 and convert to manual tranny or at least a slap stick. She was dark brown, like on the brochure in your picture, with a 318 and auto on the column. I should have held onto her, but life just got in the way. Scarlet Sue is the best color ever and has the on the slap stick. I'm trying to bring her back to original.
I’m at least the 4th owner and there have been sooooo many mismatched screws and stripped threads. I did my first Heli Coil in the drivers bucket seat last weekend so the striker would stay in place.
