So its been a while since Ive been on here I just have been busy with work and alot of ice fishing which is now over. Now my mind is shifting towards getting my car out of storage and enjoying warm weather again. So I hadn't called my machine shop in about a month and to check on the 440 last time I did I found out I needed another as it had a crack and he got one for me for between 4 and 500 which was forged and ready to go. So this time I get him on the phone my rotating assembly has still not been balanced which whatever no biggie still have 318 in my car so i can cruise fine with that, but he says oh ya I had to order 2 new valves for your heads as 2 of them were bent and later goes on to say how they must be heavy duty because they were from a motor home because they cut really hard(452 heads). now IM wondering did he bend them trying to cut them for the new seats and am I responsible for that lol whatever as long as they are not too pricey. what should 2 stock valves cost like 10 or 20 bucks a piece maybe ? not sure why he didn't call me when they bent to see what I wanted to do. Then at the end of the conversation he says oh ya I had to order keepers for your valves as the brand new comp cams ones I brought him were the wrong ones as they sent half 2 groove and half which I was under the impression was right for these 452 heads am I wrong in this but again he never called me he just ordered new keepers didn't tell me as I could have had comp cams replace the ones I already purchased in my cam kit. Oh well I'm just a little irritated and wanted to vent.

oh by the way he stated that both intake and exhaust on these 452 heads were 2 groove is this true?

They cut really hard ?

I have found that with machine shop prices being what they are, you're sometimes more cost effective by purchasing aluminum heads. I'm partial to American made Eddies but there are others available. BTW, what do you use for bait when you fish for ice (lol).

I'll check when I get home but off hand I think the stock exhaust is 2 groove and the stock intake is 3 groove... or is it the other way round? ..brain fart here lol

I dont understand the "cut really hard" either. The only thing I can think of is because you mentioned 452 heads which the exhaust seat area are already induction hardened for non leaded gas use and the shop was cutting this area? Sorry could you clerify what the shop was doing and why they were complaining please?

IMO, go get your engine and parts and take it somewgere else, sounds like he has no idea

He said the seats were shot and had to be redone so I'm guessing he had to cut valves to match. if anyone knows what keepers these heads would use for sure please let me know because I want to call him and tell him not to use the ones he bought as I would rather have comp cams replace them so I'm not buying them twice. Personally I think he should have called me on this anyways. They came in a came kit from comp cams so they may not refund for them alone but I will call comp cams today.

Valves AND seats both have to be ground when doing a valve job, regardless of condition, to ensure angles are correct on both. Really have to work hard to bend valves when grinding, near impossible unless you are insanely pissed and also intend to damage grinding wheel. A light touch is the key to doing it right. An old race trick is to lap the valves after a few runs/laps after they've been redone to get that absolute best match/seal , worth a few extra ponies.

Sorry I had forgotten to check when I got home...

Stock intake and exhaust valves;

Intake = 2 groove keepers
Exhaust = 4 groove keepers

Will post a couple pictures in a few minutes

Well its official they were 2 groove on the exhaust and the intake valves for the keepers. I went over today to give the machinist some money and they heads were done block is bored just needs hone and all other machine work is done just waiting for balancing of new crank and all that good stuff. well anyways he gave me a little box of all the old parts form the heads so I laid them out and there was 2 2 groove keepers for every valve here are a few pics. also you can easily tell the 2 new valves he had to replace as well. While the heads were apart, you should smooth out the valve pockets. The factory backcut sucks. It's not a full on port job but it helps improve the flow a LOT.

They are already assembled that's part of what he did he just sent all the old parts back with them.
