hi guys,

My 63 Savoy has greyish painted torquestruts; i have a spare set, that also has about 50% dark-greyish paint left on them...looks 100% factory original.
is this an original finish? I thought they were always bare. I have seen many guys that restored their cars make the struts black...
I am restoring my car so i would like to do them right.
Any help would be appreciated!!

thanks,
Best regards from Holland,
Marcel

On my 68 Road runner I'm restoring , the strut rods looked like they were bare metal. So I powder coated them with a metal look grey.

Every early b-body I ve had!and that's a lot! The struts were bare. Most guys paint them black because of rust (jmo)

I came to the exact same conclusion. I took note of what components were rusted and figured they were never painted. Washers and hardware was usually zinc, cad or black oxide plated. I have seen steering boxes with a quick blast of black paint and some painted pretty well. No matter, they all had some amount of old rust on them so I figured they never got painted very well.

I've seen them in bare metal with a 3/4" paint stripe color coded to their thickness. I have also seen them in the same grey primer as the under carriage. IMO, black is not factory correct.
