A friend has a 383 and auto trans he wants to put into a 64 Fury that has a 318 poly in it. The donor was another 64 Fury. Will it just bolt in? Do I need different motor mounts? Will the trans be compatible with the push button controller? I havent seen the car, any chance it has a 2 speed vs TF? Any details to aware of?
Thanks, Al

You will need different engine mounts/brackets. They are readily available. If the donor car transmission was 64 vintage then you should be able to hook up the cables that run between transmission and push button mechanism. There are two cables involved: one for the park mechanism and the other for gear selection.

You may run into cable length issues though if one or the other cars was a console/floor shift car vs the dash mounted push button setup. If memory serves the 318 likely had a 727 behind it and the cables should fit the big block 727. Not sure what you meant by a 2 speed.

Remember the kick down linkage assembly or you'll probably smoke the transmission. I believe but can't say with certainty the drive shaft length is the same. If original it'll be the ball and trunnion style, which is a little messier to deal with compared to slip yokes. Believe the bolt pattern for that will be the same between the two. Check the boot to make sure it's good and check for free and smooth movement of the whole trunnion assembly.

Hope this helps.

Swapped a 413 into my 64 that had a 318. I was able to use the cables and driveshaft from the sb for the bb without issue. I bought schumaker mounts but the original 383 mounts will work if you have them and had to find kickdown linkage as the sb is too short. Powersteering pump is also different if equipped. Otherwise pretty straight forward.

So not all 727's are the same then. I was wonder if the 318 trans would work with the 318. Is there a source for 383 kick down parts and mounts reproduction? Or what donor cars could I harvest from? or who would have them? The 2 speed question was because the owners thought it might have that (i haven't seen the car)
thanks Al

The 64 sb and bb 727s are basically the same except the mounting pattern to the engine. The kick down won t work from the sb because of the block height and possibly length to the carb difference. The bent angles are different. You can get a lokar set up as the original one piece rod is hard to find. I believe all v8s with automatics in 64 used 727s. I've read there are some internal differences between the sb and bb but that shouldn't matter if you are using the 383 727 core parts.
Your throttle cable will be too short as well. You can get a longer one from mancini I believe.

If the engine and trans are in the donor car, get everything, even if it costs a little more. If you can get the whole car, even better.
