1964 paint lacquer or enamel?

This 1964 black Sport Fury has original paint.......would it be lacquer or enamel?

My guess is enamel. How is the finish, is it checked all over? Or just dull?

Either way its Lead based paint from that era.

I would believe it is enamel.

Take some lacquer thinner to a spot inside the trunk or other out of the way place and see it if cuts it.....don't think the thinner will cut the paint if it's enamel....at least it shouldn't cut it as fast as it will lacquer paint.

It will be enamel. Both Chrysler and Ford started using alkyd enamel topcoats by 1935.

And they didnt always hold up very well!

Lacquer never really cures. . There is no catalyst in the paint. It goes soft in the summer heat. Tightens up in the freezing cold. Lacquer checking was a issue. But it sure held a nice shine after being polished up.

Ya its a babysitting job keeping it shiny. . My dad had a lacquer paint job on a 57 Eldorado coupe. That was his saturday , every saturday polishing task. He polished it so much. He actually wore the finish to the primer underneath.

Saw lots of paint jobs that had the paint rubbed off.....
