i wont change the rear in housing to one that does not have the knock off brake drums
what is the best one to used and what about tire clearance

thanks

65 is the first year of the slide on drums.
Spring perch widths is the same for 62-70B's 44"
Heres over all widths for B's drum to drum
64 60-7/8"
64 max wedge 58-1/2"
65-67 59-1/2"
68-70 60-1/8"
Those are the best choises.

Yep.

The 8 3/4 housing from any '65-'70 B-body is a good choice but keep in mind the later B springs won't work. The front spring segment is way too long!

I tried to swap over everything from a '69 Charger into my '63 Dodge 330 and had to use the '63's springs. (actually, much later I bolted in SuperStock springs for an A-body)

someone once tried to tell me that the 68, 69 and 70 housing were different overall lengths... first and only time I heard that. I have a 64 polara and used one from a 68 satellite.. The spring perch mounting is the same from 65-70.. as said before, any are a good choice..

anyone else hear about the 68-70 being diffent widths? not that it matters.. just curious

I used a 68 charger housing, bolted right up, but my 4 inch backspacing wasnt enough. So I had it narrowed 1 inch per side and it is perfect.

Are the housings that different, Why could one not just swap the axle shafts from a later B and put them in there 64 housing?

I too wondered that same thing. Never tried it, but i believe it has something to with the bearings. But, maybe it is possible. I do think if it was more feasable to do that then swapping out the entire assembly, people would of started swapping axle shaft instead of axle housings a long time ago... IMO.

I agree - we probably would have heard by now if it were possible. But I did find myself wondering if it would work after I swapped a '68 assembly into my '64. It sure looks like it would work, but it must not for some reason - probably the bearings, as you said.

They have a thread on moparts saying the axles don't interchange. I didn't think they did but wasn't sure.

The tube ends are different. 64 doesnt have the bolt flange that the axle retainer bolts to on the later models. If you change the end flanges you can use late model axles.

I dont know about the axle ends being different cause Im using my original backing plates on a 68 housing and it was a straight bolt on deal.

If i remember when i tore mine down, the 5 bolt flange is still on those housings, holds the backing plates on, and as 5.7hemi said, the brakes are all the same, backing plates included... its just the axles and the drums are a tapered fit over the slip fit
