1964 Savoy Front Bench Seat

I am trying to remove the top cushions from the bottom on a 1964 Savoy front bench seat. I have removed the plastic chrome cover as well as the stud attaching hardware. When I try to pull the top cushion out of the center it only moves a small amount and appears to hit some kind of stop as it will not come free of the center bracket. I can't see what is holding it from coming out, is there a trick to removing the upper cushions.
