I'm new to the Coronet world. I've always been obsessed with the '65 models. I've been watching this Coronet on Ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...em=&sspagename=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_102346wt_1167

Dealer is asking $29K OBO. (It is a consignment car.) With some bargaining, I think $25K will buy it.

I'm looking for some opinions from you Mopar/Coronet aficionados out there. The car seems to be built properly, but I just don't know the ins-and-outs nearly as well as I need to. I'm looking for a car that I could do some Cruise-Ins, highway driving, and a little dragging if the car could handle it.

Couple things I noticed:
- Dodge emblems missing on the hood
- the dash needs a lot of attention
- seems to be some orange peel around the door handles
- wish the ratchet shifter was installed better
- can't tell if the heater is working
- doesn't have a choke on the carb
- owner spent $8500 on the paint and has receipt
- engine / tranny / rearend / interior were all built by Chicago speciality shops and has receipts
- not crazy about how the exhaust exits at the rear bumper

Thoughts or questions?

Thanks for the help. It's greatly appreciated.

Welcome! I'm not Coronet expert by any means, but it sure does look like a cool car!

Is this the one on ebay in the Chicago area? He says it's a Coronet 500 but I dont' think so, it looks like a 440 to me not that it matters. The badge for the 440 is on the front of the fender and the 500 is behind the wheel (I think, I'm not expert for sure, but I do have a 500).
It's still a nice looking car.

nice looking car i dont care for the painted trim a bit overpriced i think i'd say keep looking i think you could get one as nice or nicer for around 15 to 20k.

Ditto.

Looks like it had quite a few shortcuts taken...

Outside of the painted headlights/grille and dash what other short cuts were taken? What do you guys think its worth? $20K? I've kept my eyes peeled for the last year and haven't seen anything better in my price range (under $28K). I've seen cars like this for $25-ish or they have more detail and are going for $35-ish. Rght?

The interior and engine look pretty clean. The drivers side quarter panel looks a little wavy to me. The front suspension and steering is greasy meaning I might need work. $25k is more than I'd be willing to pay. Nice car overall with a few things to fix or change depending on your taste.

not my choice....

I'm not seeing 25K for the car.... The 15-20K would be closer to the mark, but still.... I'd keep looking. The car looks like a collection of afterthoughts, not much personality. Sounds like someone was good at signing checks and not contributing to the project.

You won't ever see a return on your investment.

Compare to these...... Also on the market now....

Keep shopping some of the ones listed above sound much better.

No way... Keep shopping!!!! Car's missing way too much stuff for 25K. Blacked out grill??? not my cup of tea not to mention the whole dash is missing. More like a 15K car to me.

The blue car is nice but its gonna need $15k to really get it going. I'm looking more for a hot rod (a990 clone) than a stocker. I can't afford the Blue car + extra cash for engine refurb, paint, rearend, and anything else that need attention. Gotta be $15K worth of work. Right?

If you like it, offer $20K, it's a buyers market right now. wait for the auction to end because the reserve will not be met. I will have $45k in my 65 coronet vert and will never get it back out but I chose to do that. A restoration will cost way more than $25k unless you are a body guy and do all your own work. I can't seem to get any pictures. the trim is not on the sides, if you want trim (grill and aluminum) and dash done right that's $3000 or more. Tell him it's worth $20k to you, otherwise keep looking. JMO

Or just buy this one. lol http://www.oldride.com/classic_cars/742899.html

IMO, PASS ON IT FOR THAT KIND OF MONEY. I HAVE A FEW 65 CORONETS AND IT NEEDS TOO MUCH TO MAKE IT RIGHT. $17,000 is the number on that car.

Thx Superstockracer. I'm looking for some good opinions. What exactly do you see that needs to be done? I'm trying to gather a list needs vs. wants. Also, I'm trying to figure out what I can accomplish with my current budget. If it helps I could call you. Last night I put a call into Chicagoland Mopar to see if someone from the area could check it out. Waiting to hear back now.

mike, 1st the fender emblems are wrong for a 440 coronet. notice on my black coronet the fender emblems. my light blue dodge has coronet440 in the same location as yours. also look at the tail lights on my black coronet 500.
big nono is that blacked out grille.
ill need to see the interior and engine and rear end components.
from what i see it looks like they threw this car together with mixed matched parts from what i gather.put up some more pics.
if it doesnt have a dana60 for a rearend.run away from that car.hope this helps.

heres the correct tail panel on my 65 dodge440 light blue for comparison.

Thx Super. The pics and explanation are beyond helpful. I've decided to walk away from the car. If the owner wants to sell it for $17-18.5k I would then possibly be interested. For now, on to the next one. Thanks for all you help. One day a '65 will be parked in my garage.

If anyone sees a nice 65 please lemme know.

The blue Coronet sold this week for $20K. Talked to the owner today. Super nice guy and very informed. Took him a little over a month to sell it. He said the car was put together properly and everything needed is there, but it needs a little attention.
