i have a 65 coronet with 318 wide block. Saturday, I was getting some replacement parts at autozone and.........i ran into and igniton proble. no starter noise when turning key. Luckily I met super mechanic and he started my car with a screwdriver ......old school...but I hadn't seen done in forever, he thought that the ignition switch was bad because it started easily...with a screwdriver. Upon replacing the ignition and tumbler I found I had the same problem. Should I make sure the connections at the starter are clean? Where would you start? This car runs fine when started with a screwdriver! I beg for a simple solution!:headbang:

I'd suggest that you first check for good grounds and connections. check starter relay for power from ignition switch ....

Oh wait I thought you ment jumping the relay with a screwdriver.
Do you mean moving the arm on the ignition switch with a screwdriver?

i agree check the starter relay

65 coronet ignition problem

where is the starter relay located? the car showed no problems with ignition and it suddenly happened. The car starts with jumper over from battery cable to starter than i jump across the starter coil? Please forgive me as I am new to these...as a elect/mechanical tech for 25 years.....these are giving me fits......so touchy, and corrosion such a problem.......I thank you all as I am willing learner.....and respect good car mechanic and a trouble shooting.....

Bulk head connector. I had the same issue.
I removed the stock firewall connector housing and plugged the spade connectors(Male) directly into the the Female connectors.
I found that some of the connectors inside the stock housing were not making a complete connection.

I had the same problem in my 65 turns out the shifter wasn't going far enough into park for the car to start, so when I put it in park I have to give it a extra push into park, then it would start, don't have that problem now tho....

Check that neutral switch. Mine started in neutral with a little wiggle but not in park. Also connections on relay switch before you replace it.

Thank You Wedge5, Problem solved after immediately checking bulkhead connection where a poor repair of connector was promptly found!
