hey guys, i recently aquired a 440, casting date is sept 8 1965, it is all original out of an Imperial intake to pan. it was in storaged covered up for at least 20 years, turns over nicely and sounds like it could have decent comp still( you know that whoosh sound when you turn them over by hand) any way is it worth hanging on to or not? it has 516 heads if thats anything.oh and the crank is drilled for a bushing for a standard trans. any insight would be great. What you have there is a steel crank, rods that are ok and probably a decent block to build. The 516 heads don't breath as well as the later heads.

First year of the 440. Cool!

Normally those have the 915 heads with the 1.6" valve but I suppose a very early 440 could have had the 516. I think the later blocks are better if you are going to build for max power, but for a street car it won't be an issue. Even if you prep the 516 heads for the 1.74" EX valves you can get good power out of it. I'd build it if I had it.
