Hi All,

I pulled out cluster and did ampmeter bypass and put things back together. All seemed to go ok.

Now I cannot get the speedo cable nut threaded onto the threads of the cluster. The squared cable does seat into the hole all the way till the brass stopper touches the brass part of the gauge rear. However, the cable housing cannot get close enough to get the nut threaded. It appears to be about an 1/8" short from the threaded portion of the gauge.

I have the speedo cable under the dash. I plan on driving the car slowly to see if the squred end of the spins. That will tell me the cable is still plugged in on the transmissin end. I was just thinking that i may have pulled the transmission end out somehow

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

instead of driving it that way and trying to watch while driving, you could take it off the trans and put the cable in your drill (make sure drill is in reverse). I believe the cable does move up and down inside the sleeve so you may have it too far inside the transmission

thanks for the idea

if i disconnect at the trans (727 auto) will the fluid come pouring out?

i plan on jumping on this tomorrow

no fluid leakage. I just changed the cable on mine and didn't lose a drop.

thanks again

i was able to get the cable seated further back into the sheath by rotating in a few times and trying to push it back into the sheath. eventually i got it to seat deeper; i'm guessing it seated properly into the transmission end. then i was able to thread the nut on the back of the gauge easily.

just to test things out i put the rear end of the car up on stands, fired it up, put it in drive, and gave it some throttle. i was able to see the speedometer respond.

as a sidenote, my ammeter/ampmeter did not respond

not sure if this is your problem, but there is a little silver box on the back of the cluster. not sure exactly what it is called, but I hear that when that goes bad, causes lots of electrical problems and maybe that is your ammeter problem.
