1966 Coronet Hemi battery/tray

My purchased 66 Coronet 440 Hemi tribute isn't close to exact, but little by little I am updating things (or is it "backdating"?) as I enjoy the car. Purchased a red top battery from BatteryCentral. Confirmed the application over the phone, waited almost 3 months to get it. It doesn't fit the battery tray! Battery check as correct for the application on their website. It is 12" long, but the tray about 11". I assume this is the wrong tray? If so, does anyone sell the correct one?

And, BTW, are these the correct battery cables? If not, who sells the correct ones?

@Jerry Hall Did a '66 ever get a 27 series battery? I figure only 24's back when...

Hemis had a 27 series battery in 66 and 67 GTXs did also. Not sure if any 383 models had the 27 series battery.

Haven’t measued mine but assume it’s 12”.

The Hemi had a specific (+) battery cable. I think the 66 one was unique - probably due to the fender mounted relay panel. If not using the fender mounted panel then you may need a 67 Hemi cable to the starter.

Get ready for price shock as happens for so many Hemi specific parts.

I have never seen a battery tray that was to short in a 66, but a 67 tray should bolt in.

All 66-69 battery tray’s are the same from 6-hemi. All 1967 GTX, R/T, and L code Chargers got a group 27 battery. The HD battery was always an option.

Has anyone ever seen an optional battery tray listed anywhere?

Both hemi battery cables are specific to the engine if you want to be correct.

They had a starter heat shield in 1970. Never a battery heat shield from 1966-1970 on a Hemi.

This tribute car was converted from a 6-cylinder. Maybe they had the group 24 batteries with a smaller tray?

Thanks, so his car has an incorrect replacement in it it would appear... so he has a battery, needs a tray.

I use group 27s in both my 67 Coronet R/T and my 64 Fury. Fits in both, no problem. Sounds like this tray is swapped from something else.

There is / was only ONE tray for all 1966 thru 69 B-bodies.
Im guessing its an aftermkt or some cheap knockoff repop tray


and as an fyi,
ALL 426 hemi cars used a group 27 battery

The fender tag shows any differences in the body and holes drilled before painting.
So things like:
22” or a 26” radiator
right had door mirror
Radio or not
Vinyl top or not
Option trim and mouldings
Stripe codes that would delete emblem holes
Etc, etc.

So why have we never seen the code for the optional size battery tray? Because there is no different battery tray.

Next idea is there is plenty of room around the battery tray in a slant 6 engine bay, no reason for a different battery tray.
