Sup guys, Im going next weekend to take a look at a local 1966 Dodge Charger that my daughter wants me to buy and build for her. Its a 318/manual car no motor or tranny. Floors, trunk, and quarters are shot. No title, doors, fenders, cowl, and roof are all excellent. Most of the interior is missing. Guys asking $1000.

Seems high to me for a rusted out, no drivetrain, no title, 318 car? What would be a good price. Also anyone have any idea where I can find full quarters and a trunk pan for a '66 charger? I found the floors on AMD's site. If I cant get the quarters ill probably pass on it but I have 8 years to build it so not worried about the rust so much as long as panels are available.

Thanks

IMO....way too much money for that....even if it did have a title.

I'm with you......thinking that's a bit steep for the car/options.. Obviously any kind of profit would be out the window when completed, but obviously that's not why you would be rebuilding her.

I'm not aware of anyone making full quarters for that, but only patch sections. Someone key in if i'm off base on that.

Your money....your call. If it was myself, I would pass.

I have seen the quarters available and they are poor quality. That car has some unique electrical systems for the dash and headlight operation. That project could become expensive quickly, you may be better off looking at a more complete car as prices are down.
On the other hand I'd be happy if you brought that '66 back from the dead!

Last time I looked the tail light for a 66 was bringing $1,000 alone. Buy a decent driver and hot rod it up a little. 318 will be plenty for tooling around town. I'm sure that you can find a real decent car for less then you would have in the body alone on the one that you are considering.

The daughter really wants a mustang "fastback" but I'm not real keen on working on a Ford....So I showed her the 66 charger, and she likes it. She also likes the pre-70 barracudas with the "fastback". That charger is about 45 miles from me.

Just trying to get an idea if I should get this car, only thing Im really concerned with is if the panels are available aftermarket...if they are then Ill get the car if they are not. Then I wont. And it is looking like they are not available....so going to keep looking.

How about a Duster/Demon/Dart Sport......Cheaper, parts are easier to find in most cases as well as being much more repop'd. Smaller car and sort of has a sloped rear??

just kind of tossing ideas out there........

Good luck which ever route you go

Trust me when I tell you, you will be WAAAY better off finding a running/driving car for not much more money. The parts for the 66-67 Chargers are priced in the stratosphere. And getting a car with no title is just begging for a mountain of headaches. That car is good for parts only. It may be worth the cash to part it out because as I said, the prices are very high. But you would have to see what's good on the car and research the prices on line. They don't repop most of the interior pieces, trim, badges, glass, window regulators, etc. so if that stuff is good it may be worth it. And if the dash lights don't work, it will cost you almost $1000.00 to get them working. The headlight doors probably don't work and that will likely be $400.00 minimum. I would run away from that car. Major money pit! You can currently find a very nice example for around $10,000 or less. A nice running project car for about $5000.00.

Heres one you can have now.... and drive it home. Nice solid body (A small patch in the floor)...mostly original paint... beautiful interior..... good running 318. Just need an owner to fluff it up a little. Just bring $8600.00 and drive it off.

I might be interested in that car bluefury...I'm waiting on one more W2 to come in before I can file my taxes. If I get enough I may just come take a look at that car. Would save me alot of trouble and time thats for sure. I've been getting back between 10-15k every year so should get enough to buy it and maybe even give it a paint job. Ill keep you in mind for sure.

Yes, better deals can be had. There's one around here with a nice body and a non-running (non-original) 440 for 2500, and I've seen a few fairly nice running, driving ones go for 5K. If you are looking for an original 383 or a/c, they start to get a little more pricey. Best deal I've seen lately was a 67 factory 440 4speed, complete but disassembled, straight rust free floors and jambs painted original blue... on ebay for about 7K.

I got mine for $3,500. It's a 318, three speed manual car. Interior was shot, body was rought but not too rusty. Trunk floor had some holes. rust around the back window. Windshield was junk. Did not run because it needed a gas tank. The car is beautiful now..but parts are kinda hard to find, and ones you can get are stupid expensive. I'll make you a basic price list:
#working gauges and electroluminesent lights: $1,000
#Tail light lens new, reproduction: $560
#Seat upholstery from Legendary Auto (including new vinyl for front and rear buckets, and new stuffing for front only): I think I payed about $600.
You can't find a head liner anywhere. And don't even try Year One for door panels. They are a rarety as well.
Its very easy to drop in a LA small block if you like, but to get the car looking nice, and riding comfortabled your going to pay an arm and a leg. The worst thing about these cars is, that you won't get your money back. They don't sell for much. People only pay about a 1/4 of what the '68 and '69 model are worth, (the '70 model is much cheaper than the '68 and '69..not sure why?). I'd wait for a nicer one if she's sure she wants a '66 or '67, unless you guys are just DIEING to save this poor old Dodge from certain doom!

Run like hell. Unless you want to cut out what's left of the floor and make a race car based on a tube chassis. The yellow one above looks like it's worth looking at.

Yea like has already been said, stay far away from the basket case cars.
The Yellow one is worth looking at. You want a car she can at least enjoy and drive. Then you can just fix/replace the little stuff here and there, to make it even better.
You'll be much better off in the long run.
It's no fun having a muscle car that is a long way from running, trust me I've got two!!! It Sucks!
