Hi,Everyone new to this Site Need some Info. I recently bought a 66 coronet 440 with 318 poly motor. I plan on keeping stock motor. The problem is when I bought car it was missing torsion bars. My question, is a 318 poly considered a big block or small block? I know it is wider than later model 318's. Should I get big block torsion bars or Small Block. Any help will be Appreciated Thanks.

Hi Rickster, welcome to the site!

So here is some info for you: The "A" engine (which is what you have) was Mopar's small block offering until 1966 in the U.S. and '67 in Canada. After that it was replaced the the "LA" series small block (273,318,340,360) which was about 55 lbs lighter.

From my understanding size wise, the blocks of the "A" and "LA" engines were similar in width but the difference is in the heads- the poly design makes them look bigger.

Hope that helps.

Actually, the poly engine was installed in 66 cars in the states....and yes, it's a small block. Does your car have AC, PS etc too? I have a pair that came out of a 67 Coronet that I'm not going to use. The car came with a 318, AC, PS, auto. The car only had 57k miles on it when it was parked.

Hey Cranky,My 66 has PS Auto no AC. Let me know on the torsion bars you have maybe we can work out a deal. Thanks Rick

I am no expert on torsion bars, but I worked on my own several times and I know a bit of engineering and the dynamics of a torsion bar.
The bar is under a load to offset the front end weight. If the front end weight is increased then the load on the bar must be increased. The way to increase the load is to tighten the torsion bar adjustment bolt.
If the front end weight is more than what the torsion bar can take, then a larger diameter bar must be used.
Did our cars use more that 1 size bar?

yes, there was more than 1 bar offered. If you put a bigger bar in, it may not adjust level & sit too high. Also, there are left & right side bars...don't put bars in wrong side.

66 torsion bar

A 66 Satellite with a v8 would use 776/777 bars for standard suspension, 778/779 with heavy duty suspension without swaybar or 780/781 with heavy duty suspension and sway bar. my 66 Satellite with a poly 318 and A/C had the 776/777 bars in it. If you have the build sheet that makes it easy.
