1967 Coronet fuel guage not working

My 1967 Coronet fuel Guage is not working correctly. I have changed the the fuel sending unit. You can fill the tank and the Guage works but the level is not accurate. It can have half a tank and barely show on the Guage. Not sure if any one has had a similar problem.
 
Was the ground strap reinstalled or replaced?
 
New fuel sending units are known to be junk if that's what you have. Do a search on this site for "fuel sending unit" and you'll see a lot of complaints.
 
I recently installed a repro tank sending unit. The top half of the tank goes down in a flash, and then when gauge reads empty, there is still quite a bit of fuel in the tank. Better than having it the other way around, though. You can pull the unit and try bending the float down to make your gauge read earlier. I think most of the problem is that it is a generic sending unit that is made to read a more or less square tank that empties uniformly. Our '66-'67 tanks are an odd shape to surround the tire well and do not empty uniformly. I keep a little note book in my R/T console and record mileage and fill amount at each refuel. I know my car gets 15 mpg. consistently, and tank is 15 gallons (Canadian measures), so I should be able to go 225 miles between fill ups. I start looking for a gas station at 200 miles. PITA, but I have not run out of gas yet.

Any new sender I install gets tested first. I‘ve installed too many and had to take the tank down agian for similar issues.

Take the send out and ground the housing. Hook up the wire and put it to full, see what the gauge does. Then half, and so on. Mark where the rod is at each measurement. From there, eyeball the tank and start tweaking the rod.

Not only should it be fairly accurate now but you also tested everything. Sending unit, gauge, wire, ground…
 
I had the same problem with my 67 Coronet. Installed a new sender, and it got worse. I re-used the old one, bending it down until it almost hit the bottom of the tank. Now it reads 3/4 when the tank is full, and empty right at the empty mark. Had a similar problem with a 69 GTX. I installed a “Meter Match” device, but still can’t get the gauge to read more than 3/4 when the tank is full.
 
It only seems like eternity when you coast to the shoulder of the road with the wife in the car.
