How does one determine whether it is the 290 or 330 HP version.... none of the decoding sites show this info? Build date is 6-19-69

What's the numbers on the ID pad up by the distributor

Thanks, I know what you are referring to but unfortunately it is not visible.

That casting number won't tell you what performance level it is, do you have casting numbers from the heads available? Might be able to piece it together from there. If possible you could take a wire wheel to the id pad to clean it up and make the stamps legible again

3 versions available in 69, 290,330,335hp. Seems the only difference was the 290 was a 2barrel and 9.1conpression the others were 4 barrel and 10.1 compression

I bought this engine without intake manifold.

Thanks, I will do this.

The only difference between the 330 & the 335 is the air grabber package I believe.

thought the 335 was the roadrunner motor, and the 330 was non roadrunner.

I might be mistaken but I thought I read the 330 was the std 383 magnum (RR, Super Bee, Charger, RT, ect.) and with the fresh air package they bumped it up to 335. I would have to do some digging to confirm that.

In 1968-69 The 330 Horse power was sold in Charger and Sport satellite, as well as many other C body models. The block was not stamped "HP". The 335HP was exclusive to Superbee, and Road runner. The 335 Horse does have an HP stamp on the boss of the block, passenger side near distributer. The rating was an effort by Mopar to advertise the roadrunner and superbee as being something special. The HP engine had a windage tray, double row timing chain, different jetting in the carb, and higher lift cam, with higher springs rating. But, The same Intake, and exhaust manifolds. The 5th digit in the VIN however was the same, H.for example:XP29H9B(1969) four the four Barrel and 335HP. and XP29G9B for the 290 HP two Barrel.

The application of the 383-4 335 horse changes year to year.

In 68/69, there was no 335 horse AC assembly so any B body with AC regardless of transmission got the 330 horse. There is a 335 horse AC assembly in 1970.

In 68, only the RR and SB got the 335 horse with either transmission.

In 69, any B body with four speed got the 335 horse. Only the RR and SB got the 335 with automatic tranny.

I don't remember the 70 application off the top of my head.

The point is which cars got the 335 assembly changes each year between 68-70.

Since I don't know what car it came out of, nor is there any markings on the pad other than a "9", the only sure way to find out would be to put it on a dyno.

Will the motor run? What are you looking to get out of it as far as power goes

If you are confident it's still stock and hasn't been molested - you could pull the cam out of it and see what it is. That would tell you if it was a Roadrunner or Satellite engine.

6-19-69 engines will have either a full or partial vin on a boss along the bottom lip of the block near the Passenger motor mount. My 69 Coronet has the full 13 digit VIN. That is another way to know what it is. In the end, if no HP stamp, it is either the 330 or 290 version. The 290HP has 9:0 compression pistons, both the 330 and 335 have 10:0 to 1 pistons.
