OK, I understand there is a cable you pull to allow fresh air in. From where in the assembly is air coming from when the cable isn’t pulled? Why wouldn’t you always want fresh air in (rain, etc.)? If it’s rain, does rain that comes in through that hood screen get diverted outfoxed the assembly? Thanks.
 
Cable moves the flaps into either fresh air from above hood position, or air from below hood. Air box is designed with a baffle to catch rain and drain holes/flaps to get it out. Misty nights are free water injection.....

See the round holes on each side of the air cleaner opening? The cable runs a flap that opens those holes for warm engine air or closes for fresh air.

So is the reason to not use fresh air full-time, moisture? Or maybe to warm a cold engine up faster?
