1969 bad vibrations

1969 GTX 440 4 speed. i have been getting a vibration that definitely feels like it is in the drive line. From 45 and up getting so bad that i dont want to dive it over 55. at low speeds it feels as though i had a bent drive shaft. i jacked up the car to check u joints and such, well turning the wheels I hearing a thump thump thump sound . traced it to the trans out put shaft. since this is my first 4 speed mopar the question is. how much play is to much? and do you think it could be the reason for vibrations? i have been looking at the service manual and have not been able to find a tolerance for how much play is allowed. does anyone know the tolerance for the out put shaft?

Hows the u-joint? If OK grab the yoke and see if there play in tailshaft bushing. With weight on rear wheels this is how far yoke should be from rear of trans.

Describe "traced it", what did you find.. U joint, yoke sloppy in the tail housing? Any excessive slop can cause a vibration. I'd pull the driveshaft and turn the tires with it removed then check the U joints with it removed.
 
well rotating the drive shaft the yoke would flip and cause a thumping sound. the play is in the tail shaft bushing. there is enough play that you can see the yoke fall in the bushing.

You have answered your own question . That is way too much, ten or twenty times worse than spec.
 
it says its for an automatic not for a 833. since i dont know if or when the trans as was last went threw thew i will pull the trans and rebuild it after the mopar show in belvidere.
The bushings are the same, the tool will work on 833's. A member borrowed the tool from me to do his 833.
 
checked the ujoints and the yoke depth. u joints look new and no slop , yoke depth is very similar to the picture.
since this is my first 833. how much of a gear wine is there usually? it wines about 1/2 as loud a normal reverse gear taking off . after that the exhaust noise drowns out the wine.
 
With the car in neutral, push up on the front yoke at the u-joint. How far does it move? Rotate it about 1/3 turn and do the same. Pull out the drive shaft and check the bushing surface for wear. If you jack up the rear of the car only, you'll will get minimal drip from the trans once the yolk is out.....
 
well i jacked up the car and installed a dial indicator and there is a .109 movement up and down turned the drive shaft to different locations and checked again all about the same +/-.005. like i said there is a chunk moving it. I didnt pull the drive shaft to check the bushing because i have to start counting my penny's before digging into to the project. :)

I like em better than .100k but I've seen worse that didn't vibrate. Do you have a spare yoke? If you pull out the D shaft, insert the spare and turn the output shaft and see if you get a clunk sound.....that is after you count your pennies.....wish I had some to count.
 
no i dont have a different yoke. the only one the late owner had laying around was still attached to a drive shaft that looked like it had been dug up from a salt pit. so we recycled it.
