Ok guys, I have a friend that has title for a 1969 Dodge Charger R/T HEMI. This car was wrecked, parted out, and crushed back in the early 70's but he still has the title. Does anyone know what it is worth ? He is wanting to sell it and he knows its worth a good chunk of change but not sure exactly what its worth. If you have any idea, or are interested in it let me know. Please dont waste my time or yours with a low ball offer as he will not let it go for nothing !!!!

so he wants to sell a title to a car that no longer exists ? Maybe it is me being inexperienced but I would think that holds no value ? Am I missing something ?

Took the words right out of my fingers!

I say he should keep it as a momento, and using this title for anything but is frowned upon by the feds.

These types of things must be referred to as 'historical documents', so that you are not actually providing evidence that these should be used as a true registration. That way, it is up to the customer how they choose to use it.

Yes, it is illegal, yes the feds/state DMV HEAVILY frown on doing this. But, it is done quite frequently with pre war cars, that are very hard to trace origin for. It streamlines the registration process very well for them.

Again, careful how you represent the 'document'.

Any auto dismantler is required to turn the title into the State the car was crushed in at the time it was done. Obviously this did not happen unless someone had a duplicate title for the car, and it may be recorded as dismantled and junk.

What value does the guy think the title has without the factory V.I.N. tag that went with it?

Lots of rebodying going on these days, but this guy ony has the easiest part of that senerio. As an example, if he had the factory V.I.N. tag, installed on a car (original car or one he moved the tag to) it would be no problem getting a new title for that car. Getting a factory type V.I.N. tag or even a State issued tag (which would have a serious impact on the cars value) is a whole other deal and is doubtful that he could get one without doing some illegal things that carry very heavy FEDERAL penalties if he is caught.

This title has no value as a title only. That is not to say that some uneducated person wouldn't pay something for it. If someone turns the seller in to the authorities, he can be arrested for selling it.

I concur. As others have said, the only value it has is to someone who would want to "recreate" or "resurrect" the car. In other words, a blatant rebody which is against the law.

Well thanks for all the people that have replyed !! and CtownChris... I am not a big pussy hiding behind some computer !!!! This "historical document" dont even belong to me, and I have done nothing wrong as I never once said anything in my post about offering to sell this "historical document" for someone to clone a hemi car did I ?

Your intent (clone a Hemi) doesn't matter. (I shot the bullet into the sky. I didn't intend to hurt anyone. Sorry it hit your kid.) You've already publicly solicited the selling of a legal document that cannot be transfered to another party without the underlying property. Do you dispute this?

To me, it sounds like trying to rationalize and justify your behavior to others on an Internet message board is now the least of your problems.
