I am looking for help on restoring a '70 alternator. Is the internal fan a gold color (plated or not) and what color are the plates that separate the cases. I have seen conflicting pictures.
BCR,
Good morning....
I'm not an expert but have a great knowledge of alternators specifically the 1970 unit, my car is a numbers matching RS23V0A****** 4 speed car one of 350 4 speed cars that were built.
Anyway, the alternator's internal cooling fan could be plated or coated (to prevent rust). I have a NOS date coded 37 amp single sheave spare unit that has a painted fan. The stator laminations (seen between the aluminium housings) is a nstural steel color that has a clear coating that was applied when the stator was dipped in an insulating compound when it was wound. The wire color is a reddish coating. One can see the diode markings . The standard smp rating wss 37 amps and the optional unit wss 46 amps. Both had a single groove sheave.
Hope this helps.....pm me if you want to discuss further.
Cheers,
Bob Renton
There are many variations in 70 alternators, ranging from 30-60amp single pulley to 37-60amp double pulley. In addition to these Chrysler units, some Leece-Neville alternators were available in 1970. The 37amp single pulley, 3438172 is very common for non-A/C cars. As Bob noted, I've seen the rotor fans painted and coated as well, but mostly coated in a dark maroon preservative like the rotor itself. All the 37 amp NOS stators I've seen (put one in my 70RR alternator) had a green coating on the windings and a reddish tint coating on the lamination stack. Below is one currently on ebay that is identical to the NOS piece I installed. The other alternators used the same rotor, but different stators (and color windings) based on amp capacity.
