1970 GTX Drum Brakes - Red Brake Drums

I have a friend with a '70 SuperBee, he says the brake drums on my '70 GTX should be red? Is red brake drums correct for a '70 GTX?

only if you had the factory optioned rims installed. Mine RR came with Magnum 500s from the factory and the face of all four brake drums were painted red

HMMMMMM. MIne has a factory mag style wheel, I think this was called a 'Rally Wheel' back in 1970?

Yep so your drums would be painted red. They were done with a paint brush and not very well.

I always wondered about that...my 68 GTX has the drums painted red and it came from the factory with road wheels (as far as I can tell on the BS anyways).

Didnt know the factory offered it, I just thought the PO thought it would look cool. (well, so do i, cuz i left them that way! lol)

I wonder if it was a drum brake thing. my 69' Coronet 383 came with disc brakes, and road wheels, but the drums were never painted.

I've heard that the calipers were red as well. I've also heard two reasons behind the red paint. First, the red paint as monaco said was to match the tires however, I'm not sure all cars came with redline tires did they? Second, the red paint was to ID the car on the assembly line as a optioned wheel car.

Did that continue into later years? Should the rear drums of my '72 Rallye Charger with Magnum 500 wheels be red?

I'm not sure, the only reason I went digging for information and found out all this stuff was because when I tore my car down the brakes were red and I know mine had never been restored or anything before so I wanted to know why. I would think you could see some evidence if they were, mine were dirty and looked more like a brownish red after 40 some years but was obvious they were painted red.

Interesting thread, my 70 GTX where not red, I guess they could have been replaced before I got it in 1979.
Mine has Rallye wheels 15 x 7, wonder what's correct?

Nice find. I've seen the 69 engineering drawings but not the 70.

The engineering documents have pretty much been the guiding force behind what the wheels were 'supposed' to be painted.

Granted these are over the counter aftermarket ones but the ones on our car were just like this. They were still dated 1968 date codes too.

So, with all that said, what is the correct color red? I just watched an episode of Graveyard Carz today. Mark showed a can of Rustoleum that he said is very close to the original red used at the factory. I have to "assume" that Carousel Red, is what he used.

I used a rattle can of Universal Red from O'Reilly Auto Parts.

Ford engine Red if I'm not mistaken.. is what I used after being told that was close.. and then I cleared the entire drum to prevent rusting.
