I am new to the site and just figured out how to post.

I have a 68 440 rebuilt that I am trying to get running smoothly for the first time. I have adjusted the fuel levels and mixing screws. The timing is way off though...what direction do i turn a distributor cap on a 1968 440 to advance the timing? is in possible to have the distributor installed correctly and have the timing of by about 30degrees after TDC?

Rotor turns counterclockwise, so to advance, turn dist clockwise.

If you are as far off as it looks like, I would make sure dist is lined up correctly.

1) Pull #1 plug (and coil wire) and turn motor over with remote starter to verify TDC. Carefully plug the hole with your fingertip and when it pops out...
2) Check that the rotor is pointing at wire #1. If not, adjust.
3) Reconnect plug/wires.
4) Motor should fire up, even off +/- 30 degrees.
5) Disconnect vac advance. Get a dial type timing light and set it to about 36 @ 2000 RMP or where you need. Or use the oldtimertiming, "walk it up until it talks and back it off a little."
