The shop that worked on my car while I was overseas replaced the dash harness but did a poor job of it. After I got it back, the console shift indicator light never worked. When I pulled the carpet, I found that the wire had never been plugged in. Looking at the wiring diagram in the FSM, it seems to say that it plugs into the instrument light circuit of the dash harness but doesn't actually show where. I can't find an extra plug for this thing anywhere.

Go under the carpet over up behind the pass side kick panel and then under the glove box to the orange plug on the harness. Your missing another piece of wire that goes between the dash harness and the one you show.

I found an extra orange instrument light wire, but it didn't have the correct end to plug into the console light wire. I made my own intermediate connector wire to bridge the gap. Guess I dumb lucked into the correct solution. Thanks.

I was looking for an end in the dash harness to match up with the end on the console light wire.

The console light takes its source from the underdash harness feed around A/C control area, so it does run in two wires. First one bullet kind there up to right kick panel with female packard terminal, then from there ( male packard of course ) up to console with socket.

Mark said the wire running down the glove box, but actually runs over the glove box, hold by the wire looms provided along with the rest of wires: glove box light, seatbelt buzzer( which your 71 probably didn't get ), right side door swith and antenna wire.

Just like this but without the extra splice for female bullet source

That's exactly what I wound up doing. Except I couldn't find a matching plug to the one on the console lamp wire so I cut that off and replaced it with a different style. I moved the wire to the passenger side and up through that kick panel and across the back of the dash.

There is usually a triple female bullet connector behind the middle area of the dash that rarely ever has all three in use.

I'm noticing you have the rear deffog switch. The wire for console is plugged on same feed than that acc switch light and the feed is right on that area.

The three female source is used just right for those acc switches and console light. Normally the 3 cavities is plenty for 73/74 B bodies. Accesories for them are rear deffog ( blower or heater glass ) tail gate ( SWs ). 71/72s got more options like air grabber, headlight washers, Choke... can't recall some other accesories using those switches at this moment. So is hard to get all 3 provisions fill. Maybe just a 71 could hence the reason for some cars could get some wire with the splice with a female feed

Pic I found surfing around.

I knew had talked about this in the past and already had files ready for this:

circled, the feed, then the 1st wire run up to passenger side

I don't have the Parts catalog with me ( I'm in Spain right now and all my stuff is in Vzla ) to check the PN. The wire can be actually made if you don't care about correctness specially on the bullet terminal end, because you can get an orange wire and packard terminal and isolator anytime and make it by yourself. Bullet terminal end just can be similar

not the first piece I have had to buy off of Ebay to replace something lost by the shop that worked on my car.

You tell me!!! my car was pretty much complete when I got it... then going from shop to shop, have to get every part they loose or highjack because they don't care like I do.

Even though I'd already bought the other one, I bought one of these too. After finding the wire to my console light had been hidden under the driver side carpet, might as well just make it all new. Thanks for the links.

The connector wire I ordered off of Ebay came today. Part number is 2983245. Would've been so much easier if the wiring diagrams in the FSM had just shown this wire instead of just showing the console light wire plugging into the dash harness.

It should reach up to passenger kick panel area. Allmost to the floor
