Different vendors have sold me two different grommets for a '71 Charger fuel filler neck. Which is correct? The one on the right seems to essentially be the one on the left with an extra piece molded to it. It's been a long time since I took out the factory tank/grommet but I thought it looked like the one on the left. I'm dropping the tank tomorrow to replace the fuel sending unit. Even if the one on the left is technically correct, would it be better to use the one on the right? If so, should the extra rubber sealing lip go inside the tank or outside the tank?

When I replaced my tank, I just greased the old one and put it back in (skinny side in), it looks like the one on the left. You kinda have to work at twisting the filler-neck back in, it's a tight fit.

The one on the right is a later design, having boot molded to it to prevent water/dirt from collecting around the filler neck. It will fit either way but should go out.

Thanks. That's what I wound up doing. Another question. How far should the filler neck be pushed in? Should the ridge be pushed up against the grommet or pushed into the grommet. If the latter, I can't quite get it to go without going past and into the tank itself.

The ridge in the tube goes inside the boot but outside the grommet seal. Without the boot, older style grommet, the ridge would fit up against the outside of the grommet.
