Last Sat on a beautiful New England day while stopped at a traffic light in downtown Holden, MA I heard a bang then a crack - my rear window exploded! Nothing could have fallen from above (no trees, etc.) either a passing car (muscle car hater threw something?) or just a freak thing. Has this happened to anyone else?

Seen a hatch glass blow apart in a ford escape sitting in our drive at the shop, Hot day but nothing hit it unless some bird was dropping rocks on the fly.

Is this a replacement window or the original? I've never seen original glass do that but who knows.

I've had a few different cars do that on super hot days ! One was a charger other was a trans am .
Had a firebird glass blow up just sitting in the shed nothing on it or near it .
It happens

Happened one winter when I was using an aluminum snow shovel to clear the back window of a Buick Somerset, but obviously my fault bumping the glass.

Four of us traveling in the jap version challenger, late at night. Rear window started to fog up, so the driver turned on the ribbon defroster.

BOOM! Back window completely disappeared. The rest of the trip in 40° weather with no back window.

Quarters windows on my 68 Dart did that 1 in the summer when it was really hot. The second one don't remember because after the first it was another trip to the boneyard. Thought it was vandalism, window stayed whole but no rocks or an impact spot, just glass corn.

my D150 has the rear slider in it. Couple years ago it was in the driveway, under a tree, and I went to leave for work and one section of glass was shattered. No sign of rock,BB,etc. No idea what happened.

Yes I have. At the Nats, 5 or so years ago, 70 Challanger passenger door side glass just blew out. 95 ° out +. Sitting 25 feet away. My wife took our convertible- 70 coronet r/t to Chrysler employee show your car day. Noon time, lowered top, and boom, shattered back glass. Same conditions. 90° +, and humid. Appears heat, and a small amount of pressure, 40, 50 year old glass, = time bomb

Tempered glass is strong for weird shapes, but if it gets damaged on the edges, chipped or small crack it can compromise the total integrity of the glass panel and shatter.

That is sad for sure. I know the feeling and it is not good. Had mine in for over two hours and was like a proud daddy with a new son then POW. It shattered. Like you concerns with the paint and trim. So have some one help you remove the trim. Good luck with cleaning up the mess. It is pain full to say the least to clean all that butyl off or urethane. Good luck. :(

Were you leaving a 15 year olds house and her father took a shot?
Didn't you say that you met your wife when she was 15? Given your response, do you have a story you'd like to share with the class Wayne?

73 pinto hatchback glass, sitting in the driveway with the sun beating down on it , out of nowhere, boom! pretty crazy!

In hot sun wonder if it gets to a point where it's mounted and can't expand anymore and breaks.

I've seen it where there is a small spot of rust in the window channel, it expanded and put enough pressure on a certain spot and crack the window.
