I am finishing out the restoration of the body of my 72 SE Charger. I am diving into the mechanical of the engine to make sure this beast is road worthy.

I have been smelling a great amount of gas when the engine is running so I bought a fuel line - pump to carb - from summit. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/RSD-RPC6808 I tried to figure out what to do with this and couldn't find anywhere how to install this. I assume it is the wrong part. Any advice on this issue? I'm fairly new to this and I pretty much have the direction of a lost puppy. Anything will help. I attached a picture of the engine bay - it is a 400 big block, all original parts.

Any other recommendations on what to change out before hitting the roads? Engine was rebuilt within the last 5-10 years. 83000 miles are currently on it.

Thanks for the help!

Please post a picture of the part as I'm not sure what you bought.
Also if you have fumes there could be a few problems (I'm sure I'll forget a few) but carb gasket couldbe leaking. The black canister pass side in front that has about 4 lines going in could (probably is) your culprit this is areturn fuel vaper canister. Check your hoses here too. Also feel under it see if the filter is still in place . If your car is exempt from inspection or you don't have any . This part isn't necessary. And you can disconnect and bypass it as needed . This should fix your problem unless you are leaking fuel from somewhere

Attached is the picture of the fuel line. It was for a thermoquad carb which I am not certain the 400 has.

Thanks! The info is much appreciated. do you recommend any special material to replace the hoses and/or the return vaper canister? Not sure if it is as simple as a rubber hose or some products are stainless steel.

The fuel line and tank looked like it had been replaced in the past so I think I am in the clear there.

Just disconnect them trace them back to tank then just let them vent back there I make a bracket with fittings I run the lines to that and have it blocked off so nothing gets in the tank and the vapers still vent then just remove the lines running the length of the car to the can .
Also check around your carb see if it's wet .

The bracket I make is literally a flat bar with 4 nipples welded on it and boxed in on the other side so nothing can get into the tank and still let vapers out or just pinch the ports with a vise grip leave a little bit open to let.Vapers out this will work fine to and be easyer .p.m. If you need more help

Pull the air cleaner off and take a pic of the carb and front half of the intake manifold area. We can help you more with that pic telling you which carb you have and show you where the fuel line goes.

The small piece connects to the pump with the threaded end connects to the filter with a little hose on each end. The longer end goes from the filter up behind the alternator, around the dist and to the carb. Here is a couple pics of the same line connected to a Thermoquad on my 72 Charger. I don't have any pics down by the pump. If you have the correct fuel pump it should have a threaded outlet for the short piece.

20150904_175317.jpg20150904_175722.jpgLike was said above if you have a thermoquad(top pic) the fuel line attaches at the right rear of the carb. If the carb has been changed to a holley it will attach at the left front(bottom pic). This line should pressure up as soon as you start cranking the engine. With the air cleaner removed start the car and look for leaks down by the pump and work your way up to the carb. Kind of hard to see where it goes by the distributor but if there is a pinhole in the line you will notice it. Watch the connections for dampness as a leak there may be less noticeable.

Your fuel pump pulls gas from the tank so the line from the tank to the pump always has fuel in it and will leak just sitting and not running. Look on the ground under the car for any dampness. Works best parked on concrete.

Any more questions just fire away. Here to help any way we can.

Looking at your engine pic again with the single snorkel air cleaner I have to ask if its a 2 barrel? Like PP1RT said, check all the rubber lines from the carb to the pump and pump to the mail line. E10 fuel eats rubber lines.

Thanks all for the information on this.

Attached is the picture. To me it looks like it is not the thermoquad.

Is there any substitute for the rubber lines if the issue is with the hose?

Do you have the Holley Carb? If so, I have the same set up and cannot find an OEM replacement for the rubber hose that was installed by PO. It does look like it and it appears to be a rare. One company even asked if mine was "stock". Based on the fender tag, I returned it to stock - even found the correct CA Holley here in the South SF Bay area.
I ordered a fuel line from Inline Tube (Item# 390585387215) which did not work. It is two piece similar to the one you pictured. If you are successful at finding the correct fuel line, please let us know.

Just yank that pos carb off and intake and fix the problem in one hit. I wouldn't spend any money on that carb what size eng was this ? Little 383? I have an eld intake I bought off of here awhile back decided to build a different motor may sell it p.m. if interested

That is NOT a TQ. You have a 2barrel, the line you got for the TQ will not work. Any competent mechanic can bend & flare a fuel line.

As of now I am changing to a 4 barrel carb. the 750 dual feed made by holly. I have been recommended to do this by a few other people as well.

Has anyone else done this?

Might be bigger than you need right now but will work fine. A 650 single feed holley would handle everything you need on the street and save a few bucks. Go with an edelbrock air gap intake and you will be happy with the improvements. Next on the list will be headers to let all that air back out.....
