1973 vs 1974 Fuel Tanks

After suffering another clogged fuel filter incident, I've decided it's time to replace the gas tank on the 74 Roadrunner. Looking at prices, 1974 tanks are about $200 more than 1973, I'm guessing because of that hump on the top. It looks like the openings for the filler tube and sender are the same, so I was wondering if there is any reason why I couldn't get a 1973 tank and straps and put them in a 1974 Roadrunner?

If the tank dimensions are the same, yes, the pickup and filler neck are in the same location, however, the 73 tank has 4 vent tubes on the front of the tank that go to a vapor separator, where the 74 tank has only 1 tube that goes to the separator, so you would have to work out that problem and the way the 73 tank is designed with the 4 lines, each one goes to near each corner, so I am not sure how that would work if you only used one of them, so you might have to tie all 4 together into 1 line that way you don't risk having a vapor lock issue. You might ask the guys at AMD about the dimensions if they are the same. You will also need to have a different tank pad between the tank and trunk floor. Are the tank strap locations the same on 74 would be another issue if they are not the same.

Well... went ahead and bit the bullet and bought a 74 tank from Parts Geek for $305 shipped. Looks like I need to sell off some more parts to make that up.

I hear ya, I am in a bit of a quandary with my axle shafts at the moment!!!! Freaking green bearings!!! Never again!

On the plus side... I just sold an old E body carb I had, and the old fan off my 360, for $170, so that takes some of the sting out of paying $300 for a fuel tank. Now if I can make up another $230 I'll be happy.
