Hey I'm trying to find out if a 78 440 would use a 23 spine or 18 spline a833? Not sure what the 440 came out of I bought it in a 67 gtx with no tranmy
1978 440 transmission 23 or 18 spline

Well, the number of splines on the A-833 4-speed is a matter of what clutch disk you have, not the engine. Hemi's all had 18-spline. 383's all had 23-spline. I'm not sure on a 440....18? An old buddy of mine said his '68 Road Runner's transmission said "Hemi Crash Box" on it, but I never saw it in person. Bottom line... either will fit with the right clutch to go with it.

A 1978 440 in a
car would have had an automatic. Truck could have had an NP435 4 speed manual. All 440 and 426 Hemi in passenger cars are 18 spline; everything else is 23. Not to say the wrong trans wasn't installed from the factory or somewhere down the passage of time.
