I have a 67 Belvedere with a 318, 727 automatic, and a 741 8 3/4 with 2.94 gears. At a dead stop if floor it the tires don't even squeak, is that normal for 2.94s? Not expecting to spin the tires all day long but I figured I'd be able to get a little chirp from them.

It's all about torque. Taller gears naturally make it harder to spin wheels with small engine. Grippy tyres work against you too.

Replace 318 with a stroker big block, you will have no problem then! (or for less $$, try a well placed banana peel).

Yeah, way too many variables here. Love the banana peel idea!

I've been concerned that the transmission needs to be rebuilt which might explain the low torque. Any recommendations on stall converters with a stock 318 with an edelbrock intake and 4 barrel carb?

Your taller gears get you better gas mileage on the open road, but don't lend themselves to tire spin. The 3rd member comes out relatively easy for a gear swap to something a bit more 'spirited'...3.23 or 3.55 ratios will wake it up and still allow it to get on the hwy/ interstate. Being in Austin, you should be able to find a shop that can set the gears for you. That part does require some special tools that the average joe does not have. W-a-a-y cheeper than swapping a motor and trans, just to be able to bark the tires once in awhile.

Not being able to spin the tires is fairly normal for 2.94's and a teen.....unless you nail it when starting to make a right turn. Neutral drops will usually make them spin too :D (not recommended but that never stopped me lol)

Thanks. Been trying to go through the car and figure out what needs to be done. I thought the motor might need work but I checked the compression and it's 120-125 all the way around. The transmission seems like it might be slipping a bit between 1st and 2nd so I think I'll look at that next and stop worrying about the gear ratio.

I disagree.

My 73 with lower compression, higher 2.73 gear, and a heavier body spins the wheel pretty good when floored from a standing start with no power braking required. I'd be willing to bet my 235 60 15 tiger paws are taller, too.

How many miles are on your motor? Do you know the compression reading? Does it feel like the trans is slipping?

Is it a sure grip rear or open differential? That makes a difference too. I have a 3.23 open in the shed I'd trade for a 2.94 with a suregrip.

It's an open diff in a 741 case.

I figured...

you can always do what I did, replace the 318 with a 5.7 hemi and your tires will roast on command :)

I would say if you don't care about a loss in cruising mileage to go with a 3.55 or 3.91 gear set. You should be able to find one on here with an open center for $200-250 (or less)

Thanks for the advice! For now at least, it's just a cruiser so I think I'm going to check the motor mounts and have the transmission looked at. I'm not overly concerned with "burning rubber" it just seems like the car is lacking some of the "get up and go" that it should have.
