255x60-15

Anyone running a 255x60-15 on 15x7” wheels on the rear of a 62 b body - or 62-64? Any issues?

That's pretty wide for a 7" rim.
I run that tire on 8" and wouldn't go any smaller.

I'm kinda the opposite way, 255/70x15 on 8" steelies on my 62.
If the backspace is right on the sevens, it shouldn't be a problem (somewhere around 4"), tho I agree with above, that's kinda wide for a seven. (I've done worse).

Edit I wanted to run a 275 or 285 on my 8" steelies, but they didn't have enough backspace (around 4", which isn't enough for an 8"). The 255/70s fit fine. YOU may have a problem with the height of seventies, my rearend is moved back an inch. Sixty aspect ratio should be fine.

255 60's on 7's Most tire manufacturers recommend 7-9" wide.

Yea, most of the tires I’ve looked at say the 7” is minimum for a 255x60 and maximum for a 215x70 that I am thinking of for the front. I want to get a new set of wheels/tires before the season rolls around and looking at options. Started by thinking I’d get all 7” wheels since it seems to be a more or less ideal size for most rubber combinations that I’d run on this car or most others. I currently have 8.25x14 bias ply tires that have an OD close to 27.5” so I started there trying to find a front tire that was close to 27” OD, that’s where the 215x70 came from. Then I got looking to see what I could get away with on the back. Actually a 245x60 would probably be better on a 7” wheel but they are a bit under the 215x70 in diameter while the 255x60 is a bit bigger…. Quandaries!!

I ran them front and back on a 79 Volare Wagon for years with no problems, 255-60x15 on 15x7 cop rims. I know they would easily fit on the rear of my 65 Belvedere. I never had any issues with tire wear or tire rubbing. The tires looked right at home on the 15x7 rims.

I run 235/60 in Front and 255/60 in rear on my 15x7 wheels
No Problem.

With 15x8 iI had rubbing in Corners in the rear with my 66 Belvedere

I'm happy with my 255/70s cause they fill up that long 62 wheel opening. They are recommended for 6.5 to 8.5 wheel. They are 29+ tall however. You would have to check for clearance at the front edge of the opening.

I’m thinking I might drop to a 245-60 for the back. The car is not a hot rod so there’s really no need to go overboard on the width.The Cooper GTs 215x70 is 26.7”OD and their 245x60 is 26.6”OD so they are pretty close. 1” difference in tread width just enough to be noticeable. Now to find the best deal!
