I've got a bad hesitation off idle when I hit the gas. If I don't let off, it will die out. Timing doesn't seem to have any impact on it. It run great at idle. It will hesitate whether I slightly step on the gas or if I stuff it. Any thoughts? It is a 64well dodge polara with a 318 two barrel Automatic . Thanks!

Sounds like your accelator pump, might be time for a rebuild on that old stromburg.

Stromburg .... I've never heard of them. Where on earth am I going to find a rebuild kit/accelerator pump for that? Were they common on the 318 poly engines? I thought it was a 2 barrel. Any info would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

carb stuff

Most likely the carbuertor..... They really don't like the ethinaol fuel these days.

You may also have a Carter carb.... but could be a Stromberg. You'll need to determine that to locate parts.
Here is a good source for old carb kits and parts, He has helped me several times and his prices are reasonable.

Most of the old polyhead engines run a stromburg, Adance auto has repair kits for them 28 bucks i think i paid for mine. Go to the poly head list on yahoo there is a lot of info on these engines there

Carter or Stromberg.

Both Stromberg WW and Carter Ball & Ball 2 bbls were used on the 273 and 318 poly engines. My 65 coronet 318 has a Carter and my 64 Dodge D200 318 is equipped with a Stromberg WW. Both were originally equipped this way.
Most car 318's came with a Carter ball & ball carb but the Stromberg works well also. You will need to verify which carb you have because the parts will not interchange between the two carbs.
Easy to do.... the brand will be cast into the body of the carb.

As above, most likely an accellerator pump worn out.

But it may not be, you may as well check first to see that the linkage hasn't become disconnected. With the air cleaner removed, you should see the squirt of gas when you move the throttle by hand. It may also have different adjustments available to allow you to increase the stroke of the pump and get a little more gas.

If it's not a collector's item, you would be likely better off seeing if a more modern carb can be used, even if it means using an adaptor. 45 years of wear on the throttle shafts mean it's likely not going to work like new even with a kit. Look for a used 4bbl manifold and go from there! :)

Thanks all for the great info. Turns out it does have a Stromburg 2 barrel carb, model WW on it. I have ordered the rebuild kit for it from my local Advanced. I hope that clears up the hesitation. I will let you know.
