360 Oil Galley Plugs???

I'm rebuilding a mid 70's 360 and I need to make sure I have all my plugs in place. I know that I have all the ones in place that I took out including the one in front of the distributor drive, accessed and recessed from the rear.

I was online and found this article and I can't figure out what they mean. The pointer is going down the drive hole and they say there's a 'soft plug' in that hole? I want to make sure my machinist didn't remove anything, I know I didn't.

Anyone have any idea what they're referencing? Can't be a plug in that hole or the distributor drive wouldn't make it.

I would assume they mean a plug kind of like the one you see in the bottom of this pump from the same page. It appears to be a pressed in style plug with a cotter pin as a keeper.

Found this about the oil galley plug.

That picture is not accurate he is inserting the plastic thing into the oil pump drive hole. The plug they mention in the text below the pic gives the clue.
The plug they mean is in the pressure side of the pump hole and you would only be able to see it if either the rear main cap is off or you insert a little camera.
If the plug is removed you would have oil pressure but the oil filter would be bypassed.

The main cap plug is 9/16", and gets installed in between the two passages to direct the oil thru the filter. Look thru the oil filter area under the plate (with plate and pipe plug removed), and you will see the plug pass the passage closest to the pan rail, but do not pass the second passage. The dimensions indicated are close, but not exact in the pics below. One dimension is measured from the oil pressure hole on the top, and the other is measured from the main cap. Hope this helps.

Thank you. Now I have to see if it’s there, crank and pistons already installed.

Or maybe it’s not that bad. I just stuck a piece of filler rod down the sending unit hole and it’s stopped at 7 3/8”. I’ll check again, seems I’m 1/8” off. I can see now in the casting where the oil is going.

If the oil pump is still off you could pass a little camera through the main cap and it is only a bit down in the block from where the cap mates with the block.
Your measurements are pretty close what 69Bee posted so you should be ok.

Yeah, that diagram in post #4 says it all. I pulled #5 main and stuck the rod the other way too. For some reason when I read thought the first time I was thinking it was under the crank on #5 and not under the cap.

All plugs are accounted for!
