I have a block I am putting together and I have 3830949 and 3698444-1 intake, what to use?
It's going on a 65 440 block that is replacing the non-org 440 in my superbee that gernaded the motor last fall. I know I could pull the one off the block in the car, but I want to do a quick swap.
I believe all the Super Bee's took a straight bore carburetor, "maybe" a slight spreadbore with a Carter carburetor (I'm not positive). I don't think it matters in my opinion anyway. The orange one looks cleaner & already has a straight bore adapter on it. Just be very careful with hood clearance if you have a ramcharger hood, otherwise I don't think it matters much. Some others may know more about these two particular intakes than I do.
The car has the large opening A12 hood when I got it so the clearance isn't too big of a deal.
The car does have an aftermarket Holley of an unknown model and cfm(I can find out tomorrow, it's at the farm in storage) and I will be using that carb for the rebuild.
The early 440s used a square bore carb, like an AFB. Then the AVS was used for 68 and 69, maybe later too. Then the spread bores started appearing on the smog motors.
If auto trans I'd take an AVS or TQ over any Holly
but since you have the correct holly (right?) go for it
I'd still like a divided square bore manifold
What I was trying to get at about "hood clearance" is that IF you ever want to put the ramcharger guts (e.g. correct air cleaner & duct work) back into that A-12 hood, then you are VERY limited by height. On my '70 I had to eliminate all carburetor spacers & run ONLY a stock intake manifold. I used to run a 4-barrel with the air grabber & it was a similar situation vs. the six pack. It's just freaking tight up under that hood. I had about 1" to play with & on the six pack, with only 1/2" thick nitrous plates, I had to notch my air grabber scoop so it would close....TIGHT.
Now if you don't plan to put the ramcharger stuff back on the car, then you should have PLENTY of room under an A-12 hood. Maybe keep your eye out for a sweetheart deal on a tall aluminum intake? Until then, just run whichever intake is in better shape.
