I got an 18 spline 4speed trans in a car deal. I removed the cover plate and found everything looking good inside. My only question is how much movement should there be on the crank end of the input shaft? Is a 1/16 - 1/8 too much deflection? What, if any, movement at the end of the shaft is "normal"? Thanks

That sounds normal. The end will be supported by the crank bushing. What you're feeling and seeing is the play between the tailshaft bearing and the input shaft bearings. all that straightens out when the input shaft slips into the pilot bushing and things get even better when the driveshaft is installed.

There is no specification for that play. The front bearing is a ball bearing, it’s. To going to stop that. The pilot bearings holds the input shaft end like Stanton said.

I just crack up when guys are at the swap meet checking the play on the input shafts, “Oh this one is looser don’t buy this one” LOL
