I'm installing a new seal in the input shaft bearing retainer housing. This may be a very rookie question but....

Does the seal side with the most "rubber exposed" go towards the nose of the input shaft or the "metal" side go towards the nose of the of the input shaft.

The rubber "seal lip" angles toward the side with more rubber exposed.

Hope this makes sense....when I pulled the retainer off the "rubber exposed" side was showing
and the transmission was leaking oil from that area. thanks

The lip of the seal goes toward where the oil will come from. So in your application after the seal is installed in the retainer you will see the lip side.

Make sure you lube the seal so it does not run dry. Also RTV sealer on the gasket and the thread of the bolts as they are often tapped right through the main gearbox case.
Also there will be a small oil drain back hole you need to line up when you install the bearing retainer.

You would have a bitch of a time installing it the wrong way.
