4 speed nmbers

I have a 65 Belvedere. 4 speed and big block were installed at some time. I am wondering if the four speed that is in it is the correct one. It may just be that the shifter is the wrong one but it seems that it is too high and almost hits the dash. There are numbers on the right side: 0 98561 H.

Are there other numbers I should be looking at? Possibly on left side?

Unfortunately main case casting numbers on A833 transmissions won't tell you much as the same case was used for many years. Your trans does not have the raised pad above the casting number that holds the date code info which indicates this trans was manufactured before June of 1967. Other than that I think you'll need to remove and open up the trans to verify the gear ratios which will give you an idea of the build date and in what vehicle it was originally installed. Other things to check are the input shaft spline count and front bearing retainer diameter. Generally speaking, if it has an 18 spline input shaft it was meant for a 426-440 wedge or Hemi. If it has 23 splines it was a 361-383 version.

Hello Jnelson,I think all 4 speeds in 64, 65 were the trunion style drive shaft.They changed to slip joint style in 66.No numbers on trans to tell the date.

Motor and trans are not original.

Maybe I just need a different shifter.

the only numbers used in 65 were ink stamped on the case identifying it! They used the flange until late 65 supply ran out! Do you have a bench seat in the car? If so! the 64&5s had a long shifter handle! It was a knuckle buster on the 2-3 shift! especially when they had some wear on it!! Can you post a pic. of the shifter? That will help figure out what you have.
